When it comes to purchasing a vehicle from a dealer which has the most bargaining power...
Cash
Check
Debit Card
or
A dealer loan

I am leaning toward cash, (not to mention I have always wanted to show up at a dealer with a suitcase full of cash, point at what I want and riding away on it...)

Thanks,
Peter

The dealer loan is the only one that makes them additional money. Cash and check are the same. Debit cards and outside loans cost money to process and/or are extra work for the dealership.
Way back when I sold cars I couldn't care less when a customer told me they were paying cash....
In fact, if I was trying to get a short deal approved, my sales manger would ask me if they were financing with us. If they were, he was MUCH more likely to ok the deal!
I'm not sure why people thinks that cash matters to the dealer, if anything it is just the opposite. I agree it would be fun though! : )

Ask the dealer what he will give you the best price with?

something about making more money at the back of the loan.

Well thanks for the advice...
I guess I will all boils down to what kind of loan they will offer me
I will have my handy dandy HP 33s to check what will cost me less in the end; check, or loan with all the interest and such taken into account...
Because I can see them giving me a "great" deal, but in the end I may end up paying more then I would have with a check.

This is a system that I have seen in action several times.

Don't even mention how you are going to pay until you get a firm written final price from more than one dealer. Then renegotiate with the lowest one. Only when that final number is settled on, ask what they will give you for your trade. Then shop the financing the same way.

My ex-wife was BRUTAL when it came to buying cars. She was always polite, but she wouldn't budge from her plan.

GREAT negotiator! (HORRIBLE wife!)

Good luck with your purchase!

I bought a new bike a long while back with those same questions in hand. I got a better deal by financing through the dealer. I checked on the loan. There was no prepayment penalty and no loan up front costs. I let the loan go through and saved $500.00 vs paying with a check. In a few weeks I paid off the loan at no cost.

+ 1 what Etennuly said!

That makes the most sense and saves you money two ways.

The dealer gets a cut for processing a HD loan(so he gives you a lower sales price), and then you save on not paying all that interest.

I ended up going with the HD financing...
it just did not make sense to do it any other way...

If you try to pay for a new bike (or just about anything else) with $10,000 or more in cash you will get a not-so-fun surprise.
Congratulations on the new bike!
can i ride it? please?

Congrats!

BTW, whipping the trade in at the last minute never works. They just show you less for the trade, closer to what it actually is worth. The $ difference will be the same.
Of course, I only sold vehicles for 20 years and managed my own deals (and 1000's for other salespeople) for most of that time.
In the car business I charged people that were a PITA more $ than nice, reasonable people.
Or, I just didn't sell them a car.
The look on the PITA people's face when I would tell them that we were done, and that they could leave now was awesome!

Most people buying motorcycles were much nicer.

If I said anything like to a customer when I selling motorcycles the owner of the shop would said to me "Thank you for coming to Honda of Providence, don't the door hit you in the a$$". If I ddn't get fired he would sure make it clear that he wanted that guy to think he had a pleasant experience.

I'm not saying it the wrong thing to do. I know when I was being stroked by a customer I wanted saying the exact thing or maybe help them out the door. Hmmmm, that is why I got out of the car/motorcycle retail business.

When a hobby becomes your business it isn't nearly as much fun. No time to ride etc.

BTW DaveS. Merry Christmas, how is the store going.

So actually knowing what the dealer is giving you in trade is a bad thing?

At least you can then make an educated decision on whether to sell or trade.

I have always been amazed at the difference in the final bottom line sales price when you are shopping nearly identical new cars at different dealers.

I have only bought one brand new motorcycle out of the many I have owned, but I shopped around for that too. I got my Sportster at $500.00 under MSRP and didn't have to pay shipping and set-up.

(Though I know that mainly happened because it can be hard to move Sportsters.)

I guess the thing that grants the most bargaining power of all is using your brain and having patience.

The worst deals I have gotten are from impulse purchases.

Bill

(Congratulations on the new bike Interex. It looks tough.)

Customer loyalty grants the most bargaining power. The "shopper" who goes to every dealership in a 3 state area isn't going to command much attention. Even if the deal was good for the dealership to do, we wouldn't ever see that customer again. They wouldn't get to experience what seperates one dealership from another, or the quality of their customer service. It would only be about price. More often then not, these customers won't be happy anyway.

Agreed, but trust me this did not happen often. I once brought a woman into our back office, pulled the actual invoice for the car she was looking at (that she wanted an undoable deal on) and showed it to her.
She looked at it, looked at me and said "how do I know this is real?".

I thanked her for coming....
If she went straight to the Sales Manager I would have been fine with it (and still would of had a job).
On top of insulting me, she wasted at least an hour of my time on a Saturday, which as anybody in vehicle sales knows - Saturday is the day that really makes or breaks your numbers (and your income!).
The very few other times I said that to a customer, wait they were not customers, were even worse situations than the one above!

NOT EVERYONE WHO WALKS INTO A DEALERSHIP IS SANE OR REASONABLE OR RESPECTFUL OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORK THERE....

Congrats!!!

Peter... where'd you get her? OC? (can't recognize the picture)

Ride out to the races next month - you're gonna attract some SERIOUS attention in the pits! Asbjorn picks his up this week. You both oughta come out and strut your stuff.

We're going to try to organize a group ride for the end of January IF the weather looks good, if not, maybe a riding group meeting.

Again - well done!

I just signed the deal officially to refinance my house, rip up my house, and rebuild my house.

Whatever money is left this spring, turns into a XB12x.
My X1 needs a vacation anyways.

Many thanks!

Steve,
I got her at OC Harley and Buell, great guys down there one heck of ride though (especially for you)...
They still have one left...

I will see if I can make it, school/work make it pain to do much nowadays... but if all goes according to plan I should have it paid off by late Jan.

I sure do hope I can make it to the races.

A ride is definitely in order...

You have ridden one yes?
If so I would be surprised if you are not on your way to OC harley tomorrow...

best,
Peter

Peter, I rode 5 sessions at Willow - so sorry you had to miss that Inside Pass track day!

I'd find out from them what they used for suspension setup on the bikes and then do exactly what they had done! Those bikes were setup perfectly for somebody about 170 pounds.

I'm seriously jealous. Jealous.

OK now - talk about something else now... I'm gonna go feel sorry for myself that I'm still unable to pull the trigger on one til the racebike is uncrashed again.

price is price is cost is bottom line. The bike is never about that. A purchase of a necessary item is ie gas, you will shop on price cuz hey we gotta. There is a dollar amount and there is a value amount. If you pay 10k and get kicked out on your a$$ are you happy with the deal? doubt it. Now if you get to spend time with somebody that is excited about your new bike is as you are, takes the time to set it up right for you, goes the extra mile to make sure that you had fun purchasing the bike, and were welcomed back, knew you by name, invited on rides, and introduced to a bunch of other Buellers .... then you might value the buying experience a more and make the place a stop in your weekly schedule. (those are the people I want to sell bikes to) price is as price does, it aint a loaf of bread, its a machine designed and made with passion; have some damn fun. congrats on the bike Interex, bet its less than a month before you schedule a track day : D

Steve,
It was a real shame too... but I had class on Wednesdays so that did not quite work out.
I will send Buell an email, about the suspension setup... Although it may be a while before I am ready for that though. As of now, after riding the Ducati S4 and RC51 for about a month now, I am overjoyed by how this one behaves itself on the road.

I hope your bike goes back together quickly...

Brian,
As soon as shes paid off to the track she goes!
So as early as mid/late January...
Bwahahaha!

I do agree, about the experience...
Although it really does depend on ones mood at the moment, sometimes a quick and cold sale is nice
But with this one I doubt that such a sale would have worked as nicely...
I paid msrp + freight/setup/tax; and now that I have ACTUALLY ridden one, I feel as though I did not pay enough

A truly fantastic machine, and its riddled with little details that make it something really special.

But most importantly,
No pinging
YAY!

Peter,

I'll be glad to get with you and help with the suspension setup. That is the ONE "Performance" mod that you can do from day one. There are some pretty standard starting settings - even if the manual isn't clear. Get used to the settings while you are getting comfy on the bike and then you can start "sneaking up" on suspension tuning.

Ride it regardless!

Sunny and I are getting Gerbings heated gear this Winter. Sucks not riding year-round here in the Desert. Even when it's clear, it's still cold!

Have fun!
