I'm trying to see if we might get enough folks together to get a discount round trip shipping to Homecoming next year.

I have asked for quotes from REPUTABLE shippers who regularly handle motorcycles. Looks like it's going to be around $800 to have a bike shipped round trip from Glendale HD/Buell to Hal's HD/Buell for the Homecoming dates.

We have a few folks who have expressed interest in attending homecoming but would like to have their bikes there - but don't have two extra weeks for the trip.

Let me know by PM if you'd be interested. We MIGHT be able to get a better price but first look, 10 bikes will be about $8000 (or $800 each for the round trip)

Let me know also if you would be willing to send the shipper a deposit. We MUST have commitments in order to get the discounts.

Until a better deal comes along, we're talking to Federal - they give a pretty big AMA discount.

They will be emailing me their requirements and I'll be glad to pass that info along.

If you get more than a few interested, you may consider renting your own truck.
It might cost you considerably less if you don't mind the long ride.

Good point.

Problem would be securing the load in Uhaul truck but heck yeah, there's time to look into all options.

We could easily FIT a dozen bikes into a big Uhaul and see if we can get somebody to drive it for us.

Cool idea

Become a HOG member and see what they can do for you by yourself or group rate if everyone is a HOG member. Just a thought.

HOG might not be able to get the deal that Glendale Harley can pull off... we're so far thinking that the discounts for HOG through Federal are the same for AMA and other organizations.

Worth checking out though (thanks)

But doesn't Uhaul charge per mile for their self powered stuff (i.e. trucks, vans, etc)?

Uhaul doesn't have the commercial deal that Enterprise does. One way with Uhaul will be over $3000 (not counting gas)

Enterprise commercial truck rental on the 24 foot box truck is $90 per day plus $0.10 per mile. Fuel is whatever you can get it for (I figured fuel at about $1800 for the 4300 mile round trip) They don't rent one way. Not sure if Uhaul would be a better deal since we wouldn't have to pay for it sitting idle for the week of Homecoming.

Hmmmm... might have gotten an offer of a loaner enclosed trailer with a dealer logo on the side. That'd take 4 bikes and two more in the truck. Still would have to hook it to a truck and it would still require 2 drivers (you CANNOT stop for sleep without armed guards - long story) - we expect more quotes and answers this week.

Interesting. Too bad I don't have a truck to offer.

We MIGHT be able to rent a Uhaul pickup and pull the loaner trailer.

My biggest problem will be coming up with a list for:

10 bikes - rented box van (like Enterprise)
10 bikes - common carrier (like Federal)
6 bikes - truck/trailer (Uhaul/loaner)

To be determined: dealer support - Glendale HD/Buell MIGHT be able to work a deal with one of the carriers they use for shipping bikes (just asked this weekend at Willow) Glendale cannot spare a staffer to drive the truck to pull the trailer unless he/she wanted time off without pay... and their true Buell fanatics who work there (parts, sales, service) are NOT going to spend two weeks vacation on this.

It does look like if an individual wanted to pay for his own through Federal, it's more like $1000 round trip unless we get 10 commitments.

Still working on it... stay tuned.

Hokay... here's the $$$ ballpark we're playing in:

Commercial box truck with OUR OWN drivers - 24 foot enclosed box.

miles (total) 4400
mile surcharge $0.10
Surcharge ($) $440.00

Days 13
cost/day $90.00
rent cost $1,170.00

MPG 8
gallons 550
$/gal $3.50
Fuel (total) $1,925.00

Total: $3,535.00

Common Carrier $800 each bike in 8-10 bikes (still working on discount)

WE HAUL - borrowed box trailer and finding somebody to rent a truck from (figuring rolled-up costs for somebody's truck at $0.50 per mile) - $2200

Notes:

The "WE HAUL" option is most likely with only a half dozen commitments. Security issues with leaving 2 bikes exposed in pickup. This will burn almost 4400 miles in somebody's truck pulling a trailer.

The commercial box truck will be pretty danged convenient and we're not burning out somebody's personal truck.

Uhaul truck rental one-way is too expensive - either as a hauler for trailer or a moving van.

Federal or other common carrier at no more than $800 is simple and they have insurance up to $1500. Supplemental policies are available if desired for more $$$

I'm still looking but curious about your thoughts.

How many would WANT to go?

Slaughter, sorry the options aren't looking better.

I googled your location. It's 1991 miles from you to East Troy. I read what you said about not having the time to ride, but I just did a mad dash across the country, and I'd like to share a couple thoughts.

You could do that ride with 3 700 mile days or 4 500 mile days. If a group of you went, one person could take a 4 wheeled vehicle, and the rest of you bikes. This would allow switch offs when people got tired, give tool space, and the option to leave a broken bike at a dealer and continue the trip.

My main worry when I did my trip was that I was committing to some hellishly long days, and I didn't want to use up my vacation and spend my money and end up having a bad time.

It was certainly difficult to ride that far each day, and a lot of it wasn't really "fun." I would have enjoyed more time to see things and visit people. But it was still worth it, and I'd do it again.

Yabbut - I'm already going to have nearly 6 weeks of vacation burned by the end of March - I'm remodeling my Mom's garage and bathroom in Wisconsin.

Those 6-8 extra days represent a direct loss of more than a week's income. I can make more than $800 a week so it makes sense for me to ship the bike. If I had the time, I'd love to do the run but once the racebike is ready about March, my time and money becomes danged precious.
