Just curious, 9 vs. 12. Why and why not?

Ehh... My insurance wasn't that much of a difference... I think the 9x is a great bike!

I have read that the 9 is slightly smoother running and reliability seems good. How big of a real world performance differance are we talking about? Just weighing all my options......

I had a 9SX and traded to a 12Scg. I could ride the 9 with a ham fist, the 12 takes a little care.

If you do a quick search, you'll find many spirited threads on this very subject.
Me?
I'm partial to the nine.

This is kind of like asking what flavor you like best. Different folks...

Best thing you can do is head out to your local dealership and test ride both.

While I really love my nine, and won't be letting it go, I have been thinking of the TT, and the new 12R. The TT because it's a real hooligan bike to be sure, and the 12R for that "Track Day Feeling"

I really liked my'05 City-X. The only issues that I had were riding long trips and needing hard lockable bags and riding two up for us larger folks.

Performance wise, I had the race kit on it and it felt so near the stock twelve it never was an issue for me.

I thought the 9 was all I needed. For the most part it is. I do look fondly at the Ulysses and wonder what it would have been like.

The insurance wasn't a huge difference from the 9 to the 12... It was $8 a month. To me being a big guy, I wanted the extra torque and didn't care if my fillings came out.

The 9 seems smoother and not that much slower.

I test rode both at MB4 just to feel the difference.

The 9 was smoother, and the power/torque felt more.... normal. Like it builds up the power from idle up to redline(ish).

The 12 was definitely more vibraty... but the big difference was, no matter where you were RPM wise, it felt like you were at peak torque. Felt like the dyno would just be a flat line across the peak torque. No building up from low RPM's, just TORQUE!

I'm a huge fan of the 12, but I do understand why for the track (or just daily use) some would prefer the 9.

To be honest, I bought my 9sx without having ridden any 12's. The 9 was already faster then my M2, which I was trading in, and that was already faster then I needed. The handling and reliability was what attracted me to the XB platform, so the 9 was a slam dunk. The budget could barely afford the 9 anyway, so the 12 was pretty much mathematically impossible regardless.

I finally got to demo ride a couple of different 12's, and was fairly surprised at how little I noticed the extra power. I was also surprised at how much I noticed the lower redline. So in hindsight, I made exactly the right decision, but purely by accident.

The TT fits me a little better, but the 9sx fits really well also, and (with the soft luggage, GPS, HID, and heated grips) does just as well on long trips as it does running back and forth to work.

My "master plan" was to get the 9sx, put many miles on it, and when the engine starts to wear out, ship it to a friend of mine I trust along with a blank check and tell him to give me the "great reliability and street oriented performance" package. I'm guessing that would end up being $2k to $3k, and the result would come in at an honest 100 RWHP.

The only problem with that master plan so far is that this 9sx seems to be about as reliable as a claw hammer, so it's not clear to me I will to wear it out fast enough. At 20k miles (and growing daily), the thing still runs like new.

At this rate, I may have 50k or 60k miles on the thing before it needs any deep engine work. That's 2 or 3 more years, and by that time I expect there will be an air cooled helicon variant prying at my wallet...

demo demo demo, but I will tell you the Scorps that are stock on the nine are much better all around tire than the Diablos that are on the 12s, 12ss, and 12r. Opinions are wide and deep, get out and demo. Or come see me for a fly and ride program, I have one of each ready to test ride, barring snow and ice. Of course I am biased, I love my dirty lil orange hooligan trail smashing City-X

I currently have an 05 XB9SX. Love the bike. Plan to add the 1125R to join it.

I test rode the 9SX and the 12S. The 9 seemed smoother. The 9 cost less and gives me loads of fun. For my riding (commute, weekends), the 9 fits my needs. But then I'm small and don't ride that fast
