Gentlemen/Ladies,
I'm looking to become Tri-Buell and would like to get an S3T to accomodate the Mrs. on the back.
I'm around 170 lbs., she's a bit more and my question is: will a '99 fit the bill for two-up high speed touring or would I be best off looking for an '02 model?
Thanks in advance,
Steve Ford

Steve,
I have 2, 2000 S3s in stock. I'd make you a great deal on either.

Ride to the edge!

Steve,

From what I hear a 2000 model would be fine, but you need to get one from a dealer who will install all the updates (isolators, exhaust mount, etc.), and has taken care of any recalls. Basically it seems like the 2002's were bullet-proof, but you need a handful of these changes to bring a 2000 up to that level.

The S3T had no major changes over the years, but quite a few refinements. I really like them and almost bought one, but opted for a Firebolt instead. If I could talk my wife into it, I'd definitely add one to my gatage! I mean she likes the S3T, but is not up for it putting her car out on the street!

Mine had the fuel pressure regulator go out at 250 miles. The rocker box gaskets replaced at 3800 miles. The speedo sensor at 4500 miles and the weirdest one was the shifter toe peg at 3200 miles. All but the shifter toe peg were fixed were fixed under warranty. I fixed the toe peg myself.

My first Buell was a '98 S3-T. I put 60,000 miles on it in 2 years, and then after one problem too many, I traded it in on a 2000 M2. I'm presently working on a deal to buy another '98 S3-T that has only 4500 miles. With all the upgrades (rocker box gaskets, front rotor, supersized rear isolators, exhaust hanger) it should be as dependable as an anvil. I think the S3 is quite possibly the most beautiful motorcycle ever made. Personally, I prefer carburetors over fuel injection, but a '99 with all the upgrades should be trouble free.

The S3 is a fabulous bike, elegant to look at and pleasing to ride.

The best S3 in existence lives near me and would be the next Buell I bought.

As mentioned, if you are going to buy one from a dealer, go well informed with a list of the updates and recalls that should have been accomplished.

I have a 99 s3t w/2.5k mi. and was told outside of the safety recalls Buell won't budge on any of the past expired service recalls mentioned above. I have a lot of work ahead IE. exhaust mounts, rocker box gaskets, Isolaters, cracked body parts, etc...
Try to find one with these things done so you can go straight to the performance upgrades.
I do love the bike though!!

Steve, I purchased a '99 S3T in April, with 17000 on the odometer. So far I love the bike and it is a lot easier hauling a passenger than on my ex-Sportster. The passengers only complaint is feeling like they will slide off when I goose the gas. I have another seat, Corbin w/backrest, but it doesn't leave enough room for the passenger unless they are petite. I bought a '99 because I only had limited funds, if you can afford to spend 7-9 thousand there are some incredible deals out there on low or no miles '01's and '02's. I don't understand why Buell quit making this bike just when they had worked out the bugs.

"I'm around 170 lbs., she's a bit more"

The weight limit on a S3 is 385 pounds. Just by what you stated you are probably right at that limit without any gear such as helmets, leathers, boots, etc.. Be honest with how much you both really weigh. If you exceed 375 naked I strongly discourage you buying an S3 for the use you want it for. The suspension will be maxed out and can be a dangerous situation.

You mean that "Ride Naked" isn't just a bumper sticker? Things really ARE different on a Buell!
Seriously, thanks to the help of the owners of this site (amongst others), I think that I know what to do regarding load carrying capacity: later isolators, shock and mounts, perhaps fork spring upgrade and drop some flab here on the homefront.
One of the best things about owning a Buell, aside from the bikes themselves, is how helpful the owners are.
