Rocket, the Buick/Rover V8 would make an awesome engine for a lightweight car. I was the proud owner of a '62 Buick Skylark 2-door hardtop with a 190 horse, 215 V8, 4 barrel, 4-speed, made into a custom cruiser with a pearl lemon-gold body, silver metalflake top and chrome reversed wheels.
Times changed and I traded it in for a rowdy Riverside Red '63 Corvette hardtop, an extremely capable sports car with a 340 hp 327, 4 barrel, 4 spd, 4:11 Posi and sintered-iron brakes. Few cars could match it on the LA streets. I think the motorcycling equivalent of it today would be a Buell S1W, a machine that shakes at idle, smokes the tires at will and outhandles the rest in the turns!
To me, my '63 was an affordable supercar of the times, a car that surpassed the best available at a price that a working man could afford, and I never regretted owning it. So, whatever your supercar goals are, go for it. I salute you! |

It's a rotten pic, and I wasn't going to show it until I get better. Ah but what the heck. This pic does not do the Griff justice, and you really can't see how nice the pearl paint is from this pic. Not the most flattering angle either....................oh Rocket, shut up and just post it!

The same gentleman has owned it for over 40 years. He's still in the recovery business, and he's fit and healthy for his age, and wealthy. He won't part with it yet, wanting to restore it himself. But you never know.
The problem is, £7k will buy me one the same, ex-military and tip top and fully working condition. The one I've wanted is rough all over the cab and front panels but the rest of it is working and in pretty good condition. The table top winch is worth around £3k, and the wrecker is probably worth maybe £2k just in scrap value on its weight. Add those up and she isn't worth £5k next to a £7k one. That's the problem when you come to wave pound notes in front of the owners eyes. As a wreck it's worth about £2k, except its scrap value is worth more because of the dam winch. That said, getting it to a scrap yard is another thing as they won't come and collect. But its owner has another wrecker or more that can shift it. My guess is, it will sit where it is for more years to come. At 3 miles to the gallon and petrol getting closer every week to £5 a gallon, maybe that's a good thing, lol.
It's always good to keep an iron in the fire though!

Five United Kingdom pounds per gallon of gas...that translates to over ten dollars per gallon in the States. I'd be walking at that price !! |
