There's Canfield Rd that takes you the observatory up on top of Palomar. I think SCAB rider Dr. Steve or maybe it was Bigj or Ferris once snapped a pic and posted it in the yesteryear days of the BadWeb.

Funny . . . but it was 13 years ago that I spent the morning sitting at Mother's Restaurant, where Canfield Drive starts. . . offering people the keys to an odd new American motorcycle they'd never seen and only a few had heard of.

I popped the luggage off and sat there offering rides to folks.

Great day . . . great memories.

I must have missed that weekend Court, I was up there quite regularly in the mid 90s all the
way up until 2003. I really do miss a lot of the southern California roads, even if I don't
miss the population density, the laws, and the attitudes of many of the people.

My old weekend routes used to follow 94 down along the border, skyline over to Julian, up to
Palomar, and then across the Ortega hwy. Those are some great roads, the only place I've
been that has come close is up in Marin County (north of San Francisco)...

I'll quit rambling now.

I used to spend many, many, many days all by my lonesome doing terrible things to Buells.

I thought I'd lost a lot of the pictures when my hard drive bit the dust. Then while working on a project, I open a large plastic container and guess what? . . . yep, ektachrome slides from all over California.

You folks don't recall Joe Boyd but he and I had a really neat deal going. He died a tragically early death in the motorcycle business.

Southern CA, in fact the entire West and Southwest United States used to be my playground for a number of years.

Fun stuff . . .

I tried finding Blakecalander Road

This was as close as I could get. This is a one-lane, gravel road through the mountains of West-by-God-Virginia.

Hey if you all are Jonesin' for a calendar... word is the new "Bike, Barns and Bridges" will be available in two weeks. A real calendar of real bikes in real locations. : )

You folks don't recall Joe Boyd...

SOME of us do: : )

...a man i never had the privilege of meeting, but someone i've heard so many wonderful things about.

Joe worked for American Honda.

sounds simple, but EVERYONE i've ever talked to who knew him have told me that Joe was one in a million, just as passionate about people as he was about motorcycles, and it didn't matter WHAT you rode, despite the word "Honda" in his title.

Joe used to attend the early Porterville (CA) rallies. i attended my first rally in 1999, a year after Joe's untimely death during motorcycle testing at Willow Springs International Raceway.

the stories i heard about this man were legendary, and i came home from that weekend with the cloisonne pin that you see resting here on Joe's headstone, and with a fondness for a man whom i never had the good fortune to know.

the headstone was designed by Joe's son, and if you look close you'll note that the angel's wings in the center are a pair of Honda's historic "wing" logos turned on their side. nice, very nice.

ride in peace, Mr. Joe Boyd.

Honda actually had a Joe Boyd Memorial marking on some of their sportbikes the year after he passed away.

He did some amazing thing for the sport and will always be remember for his "crash dummy" leathers.

The guy was a legend and a wonderful person. I found, while digging through material recently, a case of slides when Joe and I did the first "Gads, I hate this sport" ride. Also found the pics from the 2nd one where he had the chrome lettering put on the Blackbird prototype.

He and I used to sneak off to some neat places and play with each others bikes. It was amazing to watch him ride a motorcycle . . I still recall he and I "at speed" on Ortega Highway . . I was doing everything I could just to keep control of the bike and he casually comes around me on the outside with one arm lying on the tank waving at me.

Great memories!

Here's a sign from infamous Buell St. in Bath New York. Buell St. is a one way street that has a Tatoo shop,a dumpy bar nicknamed "The Leaky Roof", six run down rental houses, a barber shop, hot dog stand and a run down hotel from the 1800's which congressman Randy Kuhl uses for a office building. I got this sign for a B-day gift after the street dept. put up new signs. I was told that this sign was put up sometime after WWII.
