brinnutz -"no love for the tubers???"

I need a tuber to model off of.
Or just a tail lamp housing really.
Other than that, I would love to build an assembly for them as well.

Congrats on your new endeavour.
I might have some tuber housings in the shop.
I`ll have to check. I see product expansion in your future.

Cool stuff indeed. LED tail lights are definitely a worthwhile investment for the back of the bike.

But like the other fellow said, we need something for the front. More to the point, if you can put an array of LED bulbs inside a Firebolt's headlight assy, and it works, the BadWeb world will be beating down your door.

Thanks for becoming a BadWeb sponsor. Here's hoping you can be our knight in shining armor!

Note: If you need a headlight assembly to work with, just ask. I'm sure someone would donate one for the cause.

I have to admit, i'm a bit lost with that.
What do people want different on the front?
Have the headlights as LED's? or just a ring of LED's around the headlights? or exactly what?

Let me know, so i'm not puzzled anymore.

THANKS!!!!

For the front... somewhat affordable, non-glaring, HID headlights.

Hey Robert..

I do a bunch of track days every year. Normally I just yank the bulb from the tail and tape over the lens. If I buy your tail light, how do I accomplish this without having to 'R&R' the entire housing. (I'm just guessing that the whole 'stock' housing is removed and replaced with your sealed unit..)

Just curious if it's as easy as pulling the stock bulb to disable.

Thanks for your time and effort..

Robert,

I intended to relate the problems some Firebolt owners report here with dim light output because, we think, heat generated by the H3 bulb causes reflector degradation over time, but deleted it thinking you might already be aware of the issues. There are other threads devoted to this issue here being the latest. The factory is aware of the problem and is working on a resolution, we've been told, but I'm not aware of anybody on this board receiving improved replacement headlights yet, just more of the same, AFAIK.

So my thoughts were like you said, headlights as LEDs. If it's possible to replace the stock white-hot incandescent reflector-melting H3 bulb with an array of ultra-bright cool-running solid-state LEDs that work satisfactorily inside the stock Firebolt housings, that would be perfect. If not that then, what might you suggest?

I realize that such an endeavor is most likely R&D (science-fiction?) at this point in time because I don't know if LED development has progressed to where they could be made powerful enough to throw an effective beam pattern on the road like "normal" headlights. But, if not, this sounds like it would be an exciting project to work on, wouldn't you agree?

Thanks,
Sparky

- Actually now that you mention it, I do remember reading about that issue on the R's. And there is a high end car manufacture that just came out with headlights that are fully LED for the low beam. But if i remember right, the high beam is still a bulb. (can't remember what company)
It is something that would be a blast to play with! And maybe one day I can look into it a bit more when the technology gets out more. How cool would it look to just have say 10 little holes in your front fairing for the headlight!?!?
I'll have to see what I can dig up on those Super LED's!

Blublak
- On my assembly you can't remove any internals like you can on a stock one, but you can very easily unplug the ground side electrical connection thats attached to the back of the housing.
Just pull that one wire and it will not allow flow through the entire light.
Its also an insulated connection, so no fear of short circuit with it loose.
(if you have internal turn signals, just unplug the ground to it as well.)

Hope this helps!
THANKS A MILLION!

Has any one adapted HID to the bolts?

HID on a bolt would be easy. Nothing to it, lots of room to mount stuff.

That gives you long bulb life, great color, great light output, low heat, and low power consumption. And the kits are now getting down into the $100 range, which makes them a slam dunk (IMHO).

I did some math a while back for LED headlights. It was a long way off then, but its getting there... Here is some rough calculations based on real world guesses and some googled conversions (don't know how right they are).

First, there appears to be about 80 mcd needed to produce one lumen.

Harbor Freight yesterday sold me a LED flashlight that they claim in 10,000 mcd. I expect they are lying by at least 50%. On the other hand, they sold it to me for $5.

So at that rate, you probably need between $80 and $131 of these flashlights go get the same light output as a high beam. This is a fairly huge breakthrough, as when I did this calculation about 4 years back, it was $4000 or so.

The next obstacle you have is packaging. The flashlight needs area about the size of a quarter. So to build a headlight, you would need the area of between 13 and 26 quarters. You could probably squeeze that into a lightning headlight at the lower end, you would need an old tuber headlight for the bigger end.

But that would not leave room for a projector / focusing lens of any kind... so the spread of those beams would be pretty messy. Meaning a lot of light on a wide area, but not much light at a distance. And those LED's are *really* blue, so effective power might be quite a bit lower then a white HID as well.

So anyway, its approaching the realm of possibility, but still not very compelling relative to just getting a HID bulb in there.

I wonder what Harbor Freight would do if I walked in and bought 26 of those flashlights : )

I want led tail and billit turns, hid headlight cant decide H/L or H3/Hid part of me says if the ignitor / ballast goes south having an H3 may be a bonus

The Audi R8 and Lexus LS are both getting LED headlights, and more makes/models are supposed to follow soon.

I think the reality is finally here.

-Awesome! It will take a little R&D but I have the housing on its way (thanks Phat_J)
But with the size of that bad boy, it looks like I can stuff it with plenty of LED's. Can't wait to get started with it!!

With the LED headlights.
I'm not too sure a group of flashlights would work too well. you need the distance on the road, and most LED's currently do not have good distance as far as spreading a beam onto the ground.
But I did find the manufacture for the LED's that are being used in the
Lexus and Audio, but they will not sell to individuals, just major companies. But i'm going to see what all my options are as far as getting a hold of there LED's.
Odds are they are pricey.
I do know a guy who works in a Lexus body shop???? maybe he has one I can just tinker with.....hhmmmmm!
