It was reported in the last week that Milwaukee Wisconsin is now #2 in the nation for the highest unemployment.

How are things where you live?

Michigan is pretty tough as a whole right now. I think we have a 7.5% unemployment rate, and I'm pretty sure we've had the highest in the country for quite a while.

I've been looking, but without a bachelors degree I don't stand a chance right now. Thank God I've got a decent paying job even though the company isn't the best to work for.

My day job is with an automotive supplier, I know well about the automotive job market in Michigan, good if you fit a niche, bad if not. I've got a couple of classes to finish to get a BA degree, I need to get that done.

The job market is pretty hot in Charlotte if you're from India

from India? or in India?

I'm not sure how it is in my area, I live near St Louis, work for a company in San Antonio, my boss is in Portland, Or and I'm in NJ and NC at clients this week and Fresno next week.

Hopefully Fresno is not on fire next week.

I have a BS in Management and finding a job in my area (Albany, NY) was a little tough. I ended up getting hired by the company I interned for, but it was only one of two interviews, and the only offer I received. Luckily, it was a good offer - I'm making quite a bit more than my former classmates on average, and a handful of my closest friends still haven't found gainful employment since graduating in May.

Lucky for some, the State has a big presence here, so if you're into Union shops and don't mind starting at the very bottom, they almost always have an opening somewhere.

I am actually working - for the second time this year I have a whole week of work!

I'm in Montvale, NJ wherever that is.

If you want to work at the McBurgerChik-Fil-Bell, there's lots of jobs, or if you can make good hospital corners on your bed you can find lots of jobs. Unfortuantely, we have a cost of living similar to the DC area and salaries similar to Boomoola, Mississippi

Its funny you should ask. They're gearing up at my work for some layoffs.

I have been asked to try and wrap up 2 of my projects by the end of the month. Hmmm.

I just hope I can ride home on my 1125R when/if they hand out the severance :P

All kidding aside. I think the job market really depends on what you can do, and what you're willing to do.

I think they're looking, or soon will be looking, for framers, plumbers, roofers, electricians, etc. in SoCal. Of course it will help if you speak Spanish and like to hang out in front of the Home Depot.

I would agree with the comment on "What you do and where you're willing to do it" made earlier.

I am an IT Project Manager and about a month ago I decided it was time to look for another place to work. I turned up my resume on all the job boards and in less than 2 weeks I had over 10 interviews local (DFW, TX) and company's from (NY,NJ,SC,MN,MT,ID and OH) contact me to do contract work.
It is a pretty hot IT market right now, which is really a rare thing at the end of the year.

Very common at the end of the year, traditionally IT consulting's best time. Q1 is slowest.

That would make an interesting debate topic. I would be interested in seeing a poll of IT folks who's perceptions are really not reality. I think we have heard it both ways for so long, it is just a matter of how you say it.....

My IT world pretty much stays the same year to year, I've had the same contract for the last seven years or so.

Glitch,
Nice tenure, in my world its a little more volatile. I have had a good run in industry experience...
Military
Retail
Manufacturing
Commercial
Financial
Telecom
Insurance
and lastly (currently) Aerospace.

If you have the will to remain fluid and can thrive on change.... You will succeed in IT. I have moved about every 2.5 years with the longest stint being 5 years. I have made on average a 5k-10k jump in pay with every move.
I have been pleased with the IT community as a whole

I'm ready for a change though, and you're right about being fluid.
I want to move back to the mountains, I'm tired of the big city, the corporate atmosphere, and the stinking traffic...etc...

+1 to that. Well, everything except the "back" part; it'd be the first time for me, but I'm ready to go now.

There are signs of an IT market correction here in the US.

CEO's/CIO's sold their company's "IT Souls" when making the short sighted decision to outsource.
Those IT Professionals who have survived will be here to collect payment

BTW... I got another project today that will take me well into 2008 - so if I leave on November 1st it will be of my own accord.

I do the consulting work for the legal team at Coke. I keep them smiling, they've told me I'll have the contract until I don't want it any longer. It's the most secure thing I've ever had to be honest. I'll stay until my youngest graduates (3 more years), then I'm headed for the hills.
