I came across this on cnn.com and thought it was kind of cool. Anyone ever heard of them or have one?

Heh, that poor guy was just minding his own business driving along at 140 and then someone just cut him off!

Oh well at least he lives to not drive like a tool next time eh?

I want to know how he hit the ground at 140 mph. Was he riding a motorcycle, or was he in an airplane??

If he was riding a motorcycle, then there's no way in hell he hit the ground at 140 mph as your vertical speed has nothing to do with your horizontal speed. In order to hit anything at 140 mph, he'd have to hit a vertical bridge abuttment.

Unless he was on a high overpass and got high sided up and over the edge and fell several stories to the concrete below. But then again, terminal velocity for a free-falling body is only 126 mph...

By the way, professional road racers crash at much higher speeds and walk away with less injuries WITHOUT an inflatable suit...

According to police, McPhatter was ejected 100 feet, hitting the ground at an impact rate of 140 mph.

Impact rate not speed.

As for jacket have heard of it but havent actually seen or heard of any actual riders using it. (until now)

I think better wording would be "he was traveling through the air at 140 mph before contacting the ground."

Hitting the ground at an impact rate implies he hit the ground dead on at 140 mph.

Phrase it any way you like, "mph" is a measure of SPEED.

Impact rate doesnt mean he was traveling 140MPH. If I had time to dig out my accident reconstruction manual I would be able to give the "formula" and explanation but it really isnt that important to me so I wont argue about it.

More like a poof when you land and start to slide. Although bouncing might be one hell of a ride. I dont know officer I was driving along and this guy just bounced out in front of me.

Those jackets are actually a pretty slick setup. I first seen one back in 06 at the Fort Carson, Colorado motorcycle Rodeo. They had a Rep there that was demonstrating the jackets. You hook a tether cord up to the jacket, when the cord is pulled it punctures a small CO2 cannister and the jacket nearly instantly inflates. At the time I think the jackets were around 400 to 500 bucks. Well worth it if you ask me.
...and yes if you just want to pull the cord for the hell of it, you can buy new CO2 cannisters for about 2 bucks.

You mean, when you forget to pull the cord out and get off the bike...

I guess you'd probably only forget once, but it'd be infront of the dealership, or bike night.
That'd be my luck.
