Found this on another website and figured that I'd share.

Some pretty good answers regarding Buell's future.

Enjoy

Seems to be very candid. Makes me wonder how much longer the air-cooled mill is going to be around.

Good interview, direct mention of the probability that the 450 class has a displacement change
in the wind.

No more RW750 type disasters for Buell! Once was enough.

Crap. I just paid off my 9sx. If I read between the lines, I'm guessing there will be a Helicon Lightning next year. If it's air cooled, I'll be helpless.

Think my 1995 Saturn can go another decade? :/

(small exceprt of an article you should go read)
========================================

Q: What are the plans for the 1125R as a platform? Can we expect an expansion similar to the XB models?

A: I think you could expect that we will expand the use of that power train into other segments of the market. I think you can expect a similar approach as we have done with the XB. We take a basic platform and make sure that it works right for different segments of the market.

Q: Will we continue to see only sports bikes from Buell? I felt that the 1125R engine could be applied to different models. Sports touring?

A: I think we’re going to focus on streetfighters. The products of the brand are pretty well known for it now. Certainly we have dreams about expanding beyond that. We are going to hit the biggest part of the market first before we change into those other parts of the market.

Q: It’d be great in the Ulysses?

A: Right, I think the power train- you have experienced it on the road, and it’s a great power train. There are still lots of potential in the power train so we plan to use it on a number of future products and expand the offering of that platform (1125R).

Q: How quickly do you intend to do so (expansion)? How aggressively?

A: I wouldn’t go into any details on that.

Q: One year or…

A: I wouldn’t, hopefully we could meet that expectation.

Now, keep in mind, they redesigned a TON of stuff in the latest air cooled mill. I doubt they will abandon it any time soon.

The 1125 is as much about the next best thing as it is about satisfying a market demand.

As long as a demand (customers) remain for the air cooled mills, they'll be around.

Steve is right. Buell has invested in the future of the air cooled bikes by re-designing the cam case etc on the 08s.

I think that the air cooled twins will continue to soldier on for a while longer. I don't know if they'll be a part of the
line-up indefinitely, but it will be a while until they are phased out.

Wow, that was a good interview.

It seems like we got more insight about future products than ever. : )

An the dude doing the interview seemed to ask all the right questions - that were actually answered.

I came to Buell BECAUSE of the air cooled mill. The simplicity, the ease of maintenance, the torque and feel. None of those things have changed, I still desire them.

I'm buying an 1125R because the biz needs one for product research. I'm sure it will be a hoot to ride. But if I could only have one Buell, it would be a Ulysses. If they made two versions of a Ulysses, one with the air cooled engine and one with the 1125R mill, I'd still take the air cooled one if I could only have one.

They'll only keep it if the market supports it and it can meet EPA laws. But I think there are enough people like me that will keep that market viable.

Al +1

I also like the air-cooled Ulysses! Now I'm not saying I wouldn't like an 1125R as a second bike, but my Ulysses will always be my #1 ride!

The optimal end state would be an air cooled helicon... don't know how possible that is.

Oh that motor. Yum. I'd still be thrilled with it if it made 110 at the crank instead of 130.

they'd prolly only have to completely redesign the motor. cooling fins of some type, larger oil passages to help with cooling, etc. i don't see that being a viable option. i think you'll see an "S" version of the current engine, but i think investing a ton of cash in taking a technological step backwards won't happen. the fact that buell made durability upgrades to the already near bullet proof xb engine (in street use anyway) should tell everyone that it's gonna be around for some time.
