In read in another thread the whole 9 vs. 12, and R vs. S. I can see engine is a noticable difference between 9 and 12. But R vs. S, all that was discussed was rider position and comfort. heres what i can see thus far.
S: big cushy seat, more upright seating due to raised bars, pegs 1" lower for a more "stretched" position

R: smaller seat with less meat, clip-on handle bars, 1" higher pegs. which causes the seating to reflect the fetal position which is considered more agressive.

Is that the onlt difference, is position of the rider?
Was there any suspension change?
Was there any engine upgrade/downgrade?(doubtful)

Only cosmetic differences from what I have seen as well. Most parts carry the same # for both S and R models, engine and suspension anyway.

If one were to remove the front fairings, wiring harnesses, complete tail assemblies, upper triple trees, handlebars and footpegs from an R and an S, you'd have two identical bikes.

Don't know about you guys,but to me there is a major difference when I ride one and then the other. I agree with the comparison of parts, but pushing one on a winding road they don't feel anything a like to me.........Charlie

Just to confuse you a little more, the R seat is about 3/4" to 1" higher than the S standard seat. The R's also have a 1" higher rider (foot) peg. The R pegs can be swapped out for S pegs rather easily and for about $22.

There is also a myriad of optional seats for both the S and R, that have varying thicknesses and change the riding position.

On my bike, XB12S, I changed from the S tail to the R tail and have the custom/touring seat with the stock S pegs, so my knees are not bent as "tight".

IIRC, the suspensions were the same on both models.

Engines were the same.
