This past Saturday I took my 2002 M2 out for a pleasure ride. Upon taking off from a green light I proceeded to shift from first to second and I think this is where my problems started. I thought I just missed the shift into second and got hung up in neutral. Once I finally got it into second, I continued on with my riding not thinking anything of it. At the next red light I went to put the bike in neutral and noticed the "N" light would not come on but the bike would go into neutral. From that point on it gets worse. The force needed to down shift caused the shifter toe peg to bend down slightly and that is when it finally did go into gear. Shifting up into gear was difficult but not nearly as difficult as shifting down. And to top it all off it started to rain just as my frustrations were increasing. So not only was I concerned with the shifting of the bike but everyone on four wheels was in no hurry to move along in the rain that was falling. A penny for anyone's thoughts on this one

Check your primary chain tension, your fluid level, and maybe your primary chain tensioner backplate (though I thought your 02 already had the new unit).

Until I saw your profile and saw you had an 02, I would have said for sure your old style tensioner had split the backplate (easy job, $15 part). Sounds exactly how mine behaved when mine broke.

Unfortunately I am not that mechanically inclined when it comes to motorcycle repair. So I am at the mercy of the dealer to evaluate the situation and do the necessary repairs. ($$$$$)

Steve,
If you're a plumber you have the mechanical inclination. Your shift pin may have backed out a little, or some other relatively minor anomoly.

If you take it into the dealer for diagnosis and repair, get a service manual and parts book at the same time.
