I took some pictures today from the 10th Ave bridge. They just reopened the 10th Ave bridge a week or two ago.  East bank section. They are starting to dismantle the south bound lanes. The handicapped guy in the van was stuck here.  The angled section. They have removed a lot of the road surface.  Another view of the angled section.  Not much is left of the section that ended up in the river.  The west bank side. You can see the wooden stairway that was built for access for the lock employees.  The Port-A-Potty survived! Hope it wasn't occupied at 6:05 pm on August 1. | ||

I went and gawked a couple weeks back and it amazed me that anyone would've survived. It's hard to grasp the size and height of the bridge from pics alone. I'm also amazed at the amount of gawkers still going to see the bridge. | ||

Yes, All fatalties were located. It took a couple of weeks but they were all found. John, nice pictures. I've intentionally stayed away, one less gawker that way. Don't get me wrong, if I still worked in the area, I'd probably stop by for a quick bow of the head and a somber look. Here's a link to a coworkers web site. For awhile after it happened I had no desire to gawk. But I think I just needed to see it. It still didn't feel real somehow. I had looked from the Stone Arch bridge about a month ago but you couldn't really see much from there. I live in south Minneapolis and work in Roseville so I rode and drove across the bridge everyday. I rode the M2 across northbound that morning and southbound at about 5:15 pm the day it collapsed. Thanks for the link, Brad. Your coworker did a great job documenting what he saw and did that day. A coworker of mine was southbound near 4th St. when the bridge collapsed. He was probably 200-300 feet from the edge. Still nothing definite is known about the cause. They are dismantling it carefully and saving the pieces to be studied. That's one of the reasons it's taking so long to do the cleanup. | ||

John/Brad, Did you hear the replay of the 911 call from the guy that rode the bridge down? They were playing it last weekend while I was up there. He was pretty calm but also incredulous that it happened. I'm sure that he went home and kissed his rear afterwards. | ||

wowsers. apparently one went down in china shortly thereafter, but it (surprise) was suppressed by the governement. i just assumed people were talking about the minneapolis bridge thing-- which is awful enough by itself. i lived in mpls summer of 2004 and drove through that area, a lot. hope recovery and rebuilding goes ok, D | ||
