During the last week of August I was on my yearly trip on my 2000 M2 from Edmonton to the west coast of Canada and Vancouver Island. On Friday I started my day in Lytton and headed for the BC ferry terminal to get over to the island. During the ride I started to notice some extra vibration in the footepegs and when I got to the ferry terminal, took off my helmet and removed my earplugs I could hear that my engine was making a very ugly knocking sound. I thought maybe the primary chain tensioner had broken so I quickly removed the inspection plug and the tension was OK. I got on the ferry but by the time I got to the island and into Victoria it was already 5:00 pm so I just rode the bike gently to Sooke where my sister lives. I usually do all my own service work but of course I had no idea what the noise was and had very few tools with me. I had a busy weekend at my sisters with family activities and Monday morning I headed back to Victoria and went into Steve Drane H-D Buell expecting to get treated like pond scum because thats what I'm used to at my local dealer. Well, I was in for a pleasent surprise! The service adviser (Jim) came out to the lot to have a listen but didn't know what the noise was. He got a tech (Carl) to listen to it and I was told Carl was 90% sure that it was caused by the compensator sprocket nut coming loose and the alternator rotor was flopping around on the end of the crank. Keep in mind that this was Monday morning and these guys run their shop at 1/2 staff Saturday and Monday and they were fully booked. Well they got the bike in and Carl must have worked through his lunch and coffee breaks to fit the work into an already full day. By 4:00 pm I was on my way. During my wait I was entertained by one of the sales guys (Sean) who is very into Buells and answered all my questions about the 1125R enthusiastically. He also sold 2 bikes that day while I was there. Great people, great service and the repair done for a reasonable price. A big thanks to all the guys at Steve Drane H-D Buell. Now if I could only get someone to pay the $200.00 speeding ticket I got on the way home I would be really happy!!
