As some of y'all know I have some people in the military. All branches. Ross re-upped on Tuesday. He felt the need to re-up on 9-11, and who can blame him? Right now he's in Charleston SC before he goes back over. In SC they are manufacturing the Hummer's replacement. This thing is HUGE!  You don't (or I didn't) grasp exactly how big this thing is, until I saw the picture of Ross' girlfriend next to it. I'm calling it, "it" and "the Hummer's replacement" because I can't remember the name. I'll remember shortly.  | ||

They built the MRAP because the Hummers are so weak with regards to mines, ied's, and the like. I'd bet money a fire bomb ain't gonna do the damage Ryker thinks it will. It's an armored monster truck to the extreme! | ||

Those guys are very resourceful with their IED designs...it is just a matter of time before they figure out how to penetrate it too. But one thing is for sure, the profit margin sure went up for the defense contractor that built this monstrosity over the Hummer. Glitch, They build those things about ~5 miles from where I live. They regularly take them out on test drives too. It's pretty awesome to see one tooling down the interstate at 70+ MPH or sitting in rush hour traffic with the rest of us. A Hummer looks like a Mini-Cooper next to one of these. They had one of those on futureweapons not too long ago. Pretty impressive. They hit that thing with a LOT of explosive ordinance, and it took it like a champ. Now, are they really REPLACING the hummer with this? Or is it a force addition? The hummer is MUCH more maneuverable that these, and can still be useful in other areas. These MRAP vehicles are not going to replace the hummer. Work has begun though on finding a replacement for the hummer. So far I think about 5 different companies have received orders to build MRAP vehicles. Force Protection in SC and International have gotten the big orders so far. | ||

That is not the Hummer replacement, that vehicle still hasn't been chosen yet, but that will supplement it, and will be more mission specific when a true heavy armor vehicle is required. --Sean | ||

We call them Buffaloes and Cougars, and they are very hard to drive (visibility). They also have a tendency to fall off of elevated roads. That being said I wouldn't want to be in anything else. Currently these are used primarily by EOD teams. | ||

When are they going to start making desert tan tires? Funny you should mention tires. They're working on some heavy duty "run flat" tires now. Bigger, badder, and can handle most anything while "flat" for about a hundred miles. Well Ross just said, in his case, this will be replacing the Hummer. He won't be worried any longer, or at least not as much as he did. He leaves out next month... | ||

So as a vet I want to see the troops get a good safe item. As a taxpayer I want the same. If everybody is all cages up inside and unable to defend the vehicule. A good homemade napalm/fire bomb could be used to stop the engine via the air intake. Thats a huge diesel engine sucking in massive amounts of air... or fire.. | ||

As I understand it, these things have been designed specifically to deal with the IUD's that have killed and maimed so many soldiers in Iraq. One article I read said that even when a Hummer is armored out the wazoo, some of the IUD's can badly injure everyone in the vehicle even if there's no penetration of the armor. The problem is the explosive force against the huge, flat surface of the bottom accelerates the whole vehicle up fast enough to break limbs, crush spines, etc. NOT nice. These vehicles have armored "V" shaped bottoms that deflect the blast rather than just armoring against it. No doubt these vehicles aren't perfect either, but they've been designed in response to a specific problem and they seem like they've done a really good job in that regard. I build those Humvee's.....these by far are not replacements!! it may seem like it because thats what the government wants you to think.. they are pushing these MRAPS like crazy because they seem safer.. well they may be.. but with only about 50% of our Up Amour trucks over the pond, the stats of our troops getting injured or killed has gotten better....and these new MRAPS cost about $800,000 a piece to our $250,000. we biuld 84 trucks a day to replace all the OLD non amour trucks.. the most i heard was that the ones building the MRAPS cant keep up with demand and build about 10-20 a month if that... thats way we are in partnership right now with a company i cant think of off the top of my head, to build chassis and i think bodies for them... We are also working on the ECV2.......which IS a replacement for the current truck we build.. its double the size and cost like $600,000.. and once we get going, we can build 80-100 a day... so right now, nobody can mass produce like we can and its going to be hard to take away a partnership with the government that has been running for 22 yrs that we have been making these Humvees.... im sure i have forgot some things, after all, ive been drinking for about 6 hours!!!!!  | ||

Another name for the vehicle, or a derivative thereof, is the "ILAV" Iraqi Light Armored Vehicle. We make communication equipment for these vehicles. We've got pics of these at work. Very tough vehicles. | ||

Hey Americanmadexb, I would like to thank you on behalf of all the guys I served with over there. Those 1114s saved more lives (including mine) than you'll ever hear about. The 1114 HMMWV's were above and beyond anything we could have hoped for. We must have lost at least 10 of those trucks, with only a few KIA. Kudos sir |
