Looks like I might end up in the greater Boston area within the next 2 years and I'm concerned about my two-wheeled counterpart. Most likely, I'll be living in the 'city'. I know there are neighborhoods spread about, but I'm sure I'll be in the middle of a happening area. My question is how does motorcycling work in Boston? Are there any more rural communities out the outskirts that would make for a reasonable commute into the city (say, less than 45 minutes?) If I lived in the city, would I be able to get out quick to somewhere where I coudln't see another building? |

Hi there Mark. Getting into Boston withing 45 minutes can be tricky...all depends on what time you need to be in, where in Boston you need to get to, mode of transportation (driving or T or commuter rail). You could be as far to the West as Framingham or only as far out as Natick... As for riding areas...you will be close to NH (NH Thunder), the NEBO group rides mostly in Thompson CT (about 1.25-1.5 hours from Boston depending on how fast you drive/ride) and then there is a very nice section of Route 2 in the Western part of the state that is usually visited by NEBO 1-3 times per year. We also do 1-2 trips out to the Hudson Valley group for a ride around the Bear Mountain area in NY. In short - lots to do - lots to see - not a bad place to ride...you just have to get out of the city first. |

Yeah, getting out of the city was the part I'm concerned about. Currently, I live in the Capital Region of NY, so I'm in the foothills of the Adirondacks, just north of the Catskills, and just west of the Green and Berkshire mountains...basically, I'm in the riding Mecca of the northeast. As far as where in Boston I need to get to... Basically dead center. The office is on Boylston St, just a few blocks from the Boston Common park thing I see on MapQuest. |

I live in Lexington/Concord area (actually Hanscom AFB) and I drive to Charlestown Navy Yard (northern Boston) every day (notice I said drive, I don't have a Buell yet, still dreaming) It's 24 miles one way and takes about 30 min. at 530 am and anywhere from 35 - 60 min. during the evening rush hour. Not to bad really, compared to San Diego. I've heard great things about NH riding and I can't wait to experience it myself. I spend my free time lurking in the NEBO section here. It's good stuff and helps me get through my lack of two wheels. |

NH does have some nice roads and there is a guy, Scotty_in_NH in the NH Thunder that has some really nice loops setup. Central MA has its hidden jems...I live near one of them that I use as my alternate ride home...3 miles longer to get there but 5 minutes faster...haven't worked out how that works yet (oh yeah...more lean angle on the bike). |
