Well my Sister-in-law is getting her masters degree in some kinda something and her "team" picked Buell as their product for a marketing assignment. She has asked me a few question that I was all to happy to answer. Then she kicked me in the nads... Her "team" feels the name should be changed! They are going to change the name to HDX... I think thats a cool name BUT.... ITS A BUELL!! Always has been, always will be!

I'm glad its just a class....

I just needed to vent....

One cool thing that may come out of the whole deal is I may take the Bolt for a show and tell Display for them..... I may be able pull some more people to the Buell side...

HDX sounds like a next-generation explosive.

Not a good image.

It sounds like desperation to me. Another tired rehash of the whole generation 'X' thing.

Tell her Badweb said NO!

NO HDX!! Bad...

Sounds like we are TRYING to be Harleys Bastard Stepchildren.

Now Mark be a good boy and make sure while you are teaching them about Buell to let them know it is NOT a Harley!

Acronyms never make for a truly successful motorcycle company. They all die or get absorbed or something unfortunate.

Tell your lovely sister-in-law that her "team" needs do to a little more research on the product and company in question before making the suggestion of a name change.

Much of the draw for the bike is being able to directly trace the design and engineering back to the living founder and originator. There is something attractive about being able to shake the hand of the man who's name is on the bike.

Were Willie G not such a weirdo, I think that his handshake would mean more.

If I owned a Harley, Willie G's handshake wouldn't mean crap to me.

There is not a single Buell owner (except maybe Skyguy) who wouldn't be honored to meet Erik face to face and be happy to have him sign the frame for 'em.

Who is "HDX"?

Sounds like they missed the marketing class for undergrads where they talked about "know your customer".

Committee, team, congress, hmmmm very few things of inspiration are ever born from them. Its usually the one person that is the crux for innovation, design, desire, and hey, his name is already on the bike. ;)

I think the group has erred.

Cutlip - Public Relations

I'd suggest, even though it's a $100 book, they take a close look. This is THE BIBLE of publics relations, naming and the use of names.

P.S. - my Uncle has a friend who "names things" . . . to the tune of $5,000,000 per item. Biggest customer is car companies around the world who want to make certain Sephia, Comet and Magnum don't mean "kiss my ass" in some obscure language. You may have read about him in Forbes. . has a huge library and has turned it into an industry. . . I'm thinking he'd "thumbs down" HDX in a heartbeat

Those of us who work in lab environments all too often see alpha-numeric designators for research products/programs.

HDX just has a temporary or research sound to it.

Tell them to go back, finish their homework. We'll extend their deadline a couple more days.

HDX

Harley-Davidson... TO THE EXTREME!!

The sister-in-law's already been beaten up enough. I'll just say this reminds me of earlier this summer when "Best Week Ever" annonced the-end-of-the-trend of things being extreme once your deodorant, chicken wings, and sport of choice (freerunning) could all be extreme.

If you need a tube frame Buell along side your bolt, to help with the presentation... I may know where you can find one.
Sounds cool!

Who here has heard of the Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach CA. Old glorious ship, now a hotel, but losing it's luster as an attraction. The new ad campaign they just rolled out is called...

QMX: the Queen Mary eXperience.

Dumb.

I thought of that when I read "HDX."
Trying to capitalize on "Xtreme" or something like that.

Tell her Badweb said NO!

Pretty much sums it up for me!

Print this thread down and let the team read it and understand more about Buell Motorcycles and their owners.

You got me Barker, I was thinking without really thinking. I guess I forgot how my past KTMs were the best off-road bikes I have ever owned. Is HD really the name of Harley Davidson?

I guess I was just thinking of BSA, ATK, CZ and the likes.

I also don't like the HDX moniker.

Buell customers are for the most part very proud to be riding a Buell. The name means something to them.

If they wanted to be riding a HD they'd be on sportsters or v-rod/street-rods. The relationship with HD is far more
important to outsiders than the owners. For us it usually only comes up when trying to explain to a non-rider what
exactly our bike is. "a harley sport-bike" usually gets through where every thing else fails.

Don't get me started on this rant, but alphanumeric nameplates have ruined the romance of the automtive industry. What used to be a name with history and elegance... is now some dumb alphanumeric designation. Names like Miata and Legend had more name recognition than the brands they supported and were therefore axed in favor of 3.5RL and MX-5. It didn't help that everyone wanted to appear European. Zephyrs have become MKZs and Sevilles to STSs. Some Infinitis, BMWs and Mercedes alphanumeric designations even broke from tradition and lost the reasons for the naming convention (how would you like you Q45 with a 4.1L V-8 or your 323i with a 2.5L I-6? Confused?). What's the point anymore. Does it matter? Does it makes sense? Some might argue the reverse is true though, with some notable exceptions, like Neons becoming SRT-4s and Mustangs to GT500s. Heck, how about alphanumeric to alphanumeric - 325s to M3s, for example.

ARGH! What is in a name anyway?

Lots, but still I hate 1125R. The name no longer tells me anything and is just one more jumble of numbers and letters. At least the product is strong enough to support the weak name.

Oh sorry, someone else already thought of that.

How about the 1125R "unfeasibly hot for the time of year"

or the 1125R "light showers with sunshine later"

I agree with these sentiments wholeheartedly. I never, EVER throw in anything about HD when I'm talking to someone about my BUELL. All that's worth mentioning when pressed about the relationship is the fact that HD is an investor in the company, but most people aren't interested in hearing about that when they're asking questions about your interesting looking naked sportbike. It would be nice to say they're sold and serviced through the largest bike distributor in the US that happens to be HD, but that typically brings up negative connotations to most any conversation. With that being said, I would so not want to own a bike named HDX. That's why I thought the string(s) about "debadging" our bikes was odd. I WANT my airbox cover to proudly sport the name of the founder of the company. Granted I did take all the other badges, stickers, reflectors, etc. off the bike, but BUELL stays where it was planted on the airbox.
