OK - you can take your best shots and beat me up for preaching against illegal use of public streets -- but illegal soapbox racing just APPEALS to me!

Oh man I'd do that in a second. Is this type of activity a LEO magnet?

I would bet that since it's being "talked about" on the net, the LEO types are going to be all over it. They even publish their pre-run meetings and "tech inspections"

Can't see it as working out much longer but I can't deny the appeal!

I was illegally doing that in the mid-70's. I took our old garbage can cart and tied my sisters old roller skates to the back legs. A piece of plywood for a seat, shoe-string steering (I used the shoe strings to angle the skates left and right), Flintstone brakes, and we were in business the whole summer at the hill on Ormand Drive.

We sure could have used a helmet...

What great fun. Risky on an open road and I agree that LEO will be shutting that down in short order. Ashame.

Oh wow - I snoozed on that one!

And to think I beyotch about other people NOT using SEARCH before posting!!!

The fact that they're a half hour away from here has all of us at work thinking that we'd maybe participate... though it could mean job-problems if we had to explain why we were in jail....

where is that old shopping cart that I had back in Jr high? That thing was a beast, no brakes, minimal steering and the "roll cage" was only decorative. Rudder Park Way down through Waikiki in Spokane, we used to run at nite to avoid getting caught ;) taped flashlights to the damnest things that ever rolled on wheels. too much fun

Admire the spirit.
But give me horsepower.
Terminal velocity means nada to me - it's how quick you get there.

"Admire the spirit.

Yeah, some nitwits I used to know did a little illegal racing on the streets too. They would simultaneously block southbound I-75, get a starter and a couple of guys at the 1/4 mile mark, and make their run. Meet back at Honest Charlie's Speedshop parking lot and pay off the bets.
The soapboxes look like fun though, and maybe not quite as illegal.
Can I borrow a sister? I ain't got one.

This one is sweet!

That road is gnarly! dirt and pavement.
They actually have spectators in this one.

I wish MA had hills like that.
These guys remind me of when I was 20.
My friends and I would pile into my old Dodge van with my old minibike in the back.
We would attack a parking lot right after the stores would close and right before the lot's lights would go out.

We almost got caught a couple of times : )

(I still have the minibike )

I don't think that the MRS. would let my kid's run that soapbox race. I think the kid's and I would dig it. I even know where to get killer fast wheels. When the family was in Akron, OH this year for the All-American SBD the German race team had a super set on their Ultimate Speed car. You can buy similar wheels from them for $400-$600 a wheel.

How much do you get to win?

Nate,
Fitchberg, MA does have hills like that. I'm sure there are other places in that area too.

I've seen that skateboard pic. When I saw it, I imagined that being either of my wild thang boys, well, my daughter too for that matter, and just barely too far away for me to catch them before take off.
Oh memories of the ER!!
