Ok, I've got to move from Fl. to CO. due to PCSing to my new duty station. Well, I've got the truck to do it, Dodge 2500 5.9L diesel 4x4, just need to rent a trailer for my bike. I was looking at the UHAUL 4x8 or 5x8 ones. My other concern is the small ring they have up front for tie downs and they only have tether hooks on the sides of the walls. I dunno if those would be good enough to hold my precious. Has anyone ever rented a trailer from Uhaul like so for this? | ||

Are you going to put other stuff in the trailer with the bike, or is the trailer only for the bike? If it's just for the bike then there are a bunch of trailers that would work on craigslist for about the cost of a trailer rental: http://orlando.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=uti lity%20trailer for example: http://orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/408338628.html As far as putting a bike inside a U-Haul truck or enclosed trailer, I've done it but usually pack a mattress and other stuff around the bike and don't cinch down too hard when ratcheting the bike to the sidebars of the truck or trailer. They charge you if you break one off according to a friend who broke a sidebar off once. | ||

Some of the local U-Haul shops have an open trailer with a "nose pocket" on the front made for hauling bikes. Might see if there's one of those down there available for a one-way rental. | ||

Looked into them. The ones here won't let me take it out of the area. I've looked at the other open trailers, they look more sturdy, but I would really like to have my bike secured inside a trailers locked. | ||

The only other way to get it there secure without worrying too much about damage to the trailer itself is to build a sub-frame like a T-bar setup with the center of the T being a motorcycle ramp channel and the T portion set across near the handlebar location, then slide it into the trailer and secure the bike to the subframe. Cat, you doing a partial DITY? The first time, I PCS'd from TX to Virginia, I stuck BOTH my bikes in the moving company's truck.... Second time, I did a Full DITY, and took the bars, pegs, etc, off, and packed the bike nicely into the U-haul(will never do a DITY again), I had to pay out 2300 of MY OWN money for that... Anyway... Stick the bike in the truck, and rent a closed trailer for your stuff..... Chase | ||

Cataract2, We had to rent a U-Haul truck and a trailer when Janet had a horizontal, then, vertical event, (highside), while we were on vacation. They said "a motor vehicle cannot be transported inside there enclosed trucks or trailers". I did not verify this. As they had a two place open bike trailer available. Turned out when I went to pick it all up, the trailer was really just a one place. Lucky for us, someone else had already used it to haul two bikes. There were extra tie-down points in the middle. Chase, doing a full DITY. How come you payed 2300? I was looking up the prices and from here to CO is was around $350. I already got an advance for it so I'm set. Was planning on using the trailer for the bike so I could lock it up for security and put my stuff in the bed of the truck with the cover locked. I have an 8ft bed so no worries for space. | ||

I might suggest putting your "stuff" inside the trailer, and putting the bike in the bed of the truck for better security while in transit. Florida to Colorado is a one to three day drive depending on how fast you go. If you have to park it overnight someplace then fling a tarp over the bike, a real noisey blue plastic type of tarp with way too many bungies to slow the potential buggers down some. A couple of spent .308 casings floating around in the bed of the truck will possibly add a few security points to consider for any potential would-be thieves. | ||

Cataract- I have. I moved down here last year and had a 16ft box truck but same problem as the trailer, no tie down points and they get pissed if you screw something to the floor. What I did was I built a crate out of 2x4's, like a palate and straped the bike to it. It was rock solid and didnt move a bit. cost like 20 bucks if that to build. I can send you some pics or if you want it you can come get it. Im not going to use it any time soon. | ||

Well, did a full DITY, moved my stuff from MASS, to Texas... Truck rental alone was 2200ish... Had to tow a trailer for one of my trucks, nad the ex wife drive the other truck... yadda yadda... Regardles, the advance it self was only 1700 etc etc The full move amount, according to THEM(FISC), should have only taken 2700 with perdiem... BWAHAHAHA, when I presented my receipts, they said they knew they were due for re-calc... but... got stuck with it.. Gas alone, lodging, food, etc, added up to be quite a bit... BUT, that was my experience.. .doesnt sound like you have that much to though... BTW, with your trailer locked to the back of the truck, they wouldnt be able to get the bike out... " If it's any consolation, regardless of how the government treats you, I still thank you immensely for your service to our country.
