I am LOOKING at adding a 97 S1 to the stable...

Has right at 10,000 miles and appears to be in VERY GOOD shape.

QUESTION:

Owner states that AFTER riding for an extended amount of time that he NOTICES (primary fluid) around the STATOR Plug...

Anyone seen ANYTHING like this??? I have NOT laid actual eyes on it.. but have seen digital pics....

He is COMPLETELY UP FRONT and HONEST with everything on the bike.

Thanks,
Matt.

This is some of the message sent to me on the BUELL S1.

"As far as the condition of the S1. It appears there was a rocker box leak
on the rear cylinder. It has stained the finished some on the back of the
jug. It appears the previous owner may have ran it a while before having it
fixed. Does not leak now. I have noticed after riding it awhile there is
some primary fluid that appears to be making its way out around the stator
plug. This is a very very small amount and does not appear to be getting
any worse. To my under standing the bike sat for a while before I purchased
it. The exhaust has been welded at the bracket on the bottom. Appears to
have cracked and was repaired. Also look as if the previous owner was going
to try to repaint the engine with the Harley engine paint. The cases on the
bottom looks cleaner than the jugs. I do have the carbon fiber rear fender
also."

Thanks,
Matt.

Stator plug--up around the starter?

If that's the plug you're thinking about, it could be blowing fluid out of the transmission vent tube (leaky crank seal causes this--lots of guys have fixed them, it's apparently not a real big job but I haven't done one yet).

It could also be leaking around the gasket between the starter and the inner primary. That one I have done and it's a snap. Pull the primary cover, two bolts removes the starter, R&R gasket and re-assemble.

Yep, I think the starter gasket goes out within 10k miles on all tubers. The symptom is oil on the top of the motor behind the rear cylinder. It's a cheap and easy fix.

Good deal guys THANKS.

If you can... Email me where to look in the repair manual to have it fixed..

Ie... is it the STARTER GASKET section???

And IF... I am already in there... AND ITS EASY... is there ANYTHING ELSE that should be replaced?????

Thanks for EVERYTHING.
Matt.

If your already in there (the primary) you might as well replace the crank seal with the new style 2 lip seal.
If your's isn't leaking, it will be...

Also may as well replace the primary tensioner with the new heavier version.
Less than $30 for both parts.
Also the new metal primary gasket will eliminate any leakage problems down the road.

As long as you're in there, make sure you have the updated primary chain tensioner--the old style tends to fail.

I thought my stator plug or my starter gasket was leaking, but it turned out to be a leak at the base of the cylinders.

Two of those are easy fixes, one of them is not. Make sure you know the source of the leak for 'administrative' reasons (haggling).
