Hey guys I was curious if anyone knows how hard it is to get an out of state bike registered in CA.? I am looking for a used Ulysses and I have seen some good deals out of state. If anyone is here in Cali and selling one I could be interested.

Thanks, Chris

If the Ulysses you buy has CA emissions (evaporative system), it's not a problem at all.
Or,
If it has 7500 (or more) miles clocked "out of state", it qualifies as a "used" bike, and that is no problem either.

Bought mine from a guy in Reno, bike had 850 miles and was no problem. CA just wants their money.

I have more anecdotes if you are interested...

Btw a Californian CANNOT be the one who put the original 7500 out of state miles on the bike. It has to be an out of state R.O.

I had NO problem registering the RS1200 in CA - it was a NY bike and had 11 thou. on the clock.

Well - there was ONE slight problem - the mouth breather DMV guy that inspected the bike (it was in the truck) kept attempting to set his aluminum clipboard on my custom painted tank cover!! It may be flat on top, but it's NOT a freaking desk! I think he might have caught on after the third time I diverted it and said "I'll hold that for you."

Are you sure? I seem to remember Ferris Bueller buying a weestrom out of state and having to ride 7500 miles around the country before he could bring it home to CA.

I think what that stipulation is getting at is that you can't buy a NEW non CA bike out of state yourself, then put that 7,500 miles on it and reg it in CA. You need to buy it USED from an out-of-CA owner. You can do what is necessary to get that mileage up to the req'd # as it's unlikily that any of tha CA DMV people will notice you riding through Colorado and Utah (going "WOO-HOO" the while) as you get the min. mileage.

I think that's how it goes.

Hey Thanks for the feedback guys. From what I gathered is that as long as the bike has at least 7500 miles and I didn't put those miles on that I should be fine. Your post made laugh Leftcostal.

A couple more quick questions. If I buy the bike out of state do I still have to pay sales tax when I go to register it? Also does it cost more to get an out of state bike registered in to my name as opposed to buying it here in Cali?

Again i appreciate your time and feedback.

Thanks, Chris

an aside, but FYI for those who might be moving to Cali - you bring in your bike with you regardless of mileage.

No, but you will pay what California calls a "Use Tax", which is the same rate as sales tax in your county.

No, registration fees are the same. However, the DMV droan, may tell you the bike has to be inspected by the CHP, to verify the V.I.N.

Gotcha. Thanks Teeps. A "use Tax" huh. It's amazing how the government always finds a way to get "their" money.

it does have to be inspected. they have to check the frame number and the motor number to make sure it is correct. Make sure you know where those are, and make it easy for the ca person to find it. almost all of my bikes had to have this done in california.

arizona too. in fact in arizona, I had to show them the little frame sticker for emissions, etc? don't know what you have to do in arizona,if you repainted the bike, and took off the stickers....

getting tougher in arizona. my bikes from california did not pass emisssions. you are lucky you do not have to go to emissions on a bike. not fun.

I wonder how much longer I can keep the carb buells passing the test. they have to be adjusted at the shop and checked before taking the bikes in. they will barely run, but they pass. then you have to make sure they can run again.
