I'm getting a new XB12R soon, is the extended warranty worth the cost they charge? This is my first new bike purchase and I will be keeping this bike a long time. What's your opinion?

After owning my 03 XB9S since new until just last month I would say no. I never had one issue with my bike in the time I owned it. I would be willing to bet some people have used it to its full worth, but the majority of owners would not. It is another way for companies to make money. I would bet if you get a lemon it will makes itself clear within the factory warranty timeframe.

Yes.

When I bought my 2001 Sporty, HD had a Money Back Promotion. If you didn't use the Extended Warranty, send in some paperwork within 30 days of the expiration, they send a check back for the $799. I lost a valve guide in the rear cylinder with about 90 left on the extended warranty.

I bought the EW on the XB 'cause it was a brandy-spankin' new design and figured there would be glitches. With the number of charging system problems I've had, I think it was money well spent.

That said, both mine are out of warranty now!

Depends
at 3 years, one year out of warranty you lunch the motor or tranny, you will be glad you had it.

If you never have any major trouble then no.

It is an insurance plan.

I have life insurance, I don't really plan on dying anytime soon but you just never know.

how much is it?

How long are you covered?

What are you covered for?

Who is issuing the warranty: the dealer, HD/Buell or third party?

Do you already have a LOT of confidence in your dealer?

No. Take good care of your ride and get a shop manual.

You all have valid points.

I think the warranty is through HD, I’ll have to ask again. It covers roadside emergencies, towing, hotel and meal cost for delays. It doesn’t cover the belt, fluids, brake pads or worn out tires. It does cover your tires for road hazards, unless they already need replacement. My understanding is it covers everything the original 2 year does.

I was thinking of getting the 7 year one, which extends the factory 2 year warranty for 5 more years. Its $2059, and if you break the cost down for the 7 year total its just $26 per month.

I am getting the factory manual/parts books and will do all of my own work. I just don't think I could afford any major hits for a big repair. Seeing as how the '08 model has had some upgrades/changes it may be prudent to buy it. But if others have had problems using the warranty at some dealerships, it may not be worth the money.

There's an extra charge of $150 if you wait to purchase the extended warranty if it's been over 90 days/or 2,000 miles since you've taken delivery. Otherwise it can be purchased anytime during the original 2 year one.

Thanks for all your input. This place is a great resource!

It doesn't cover the rear shock, thats considered a wear item, at least it didn't on my X1 way back when I had the warranty

It is probably worth it if you plan on riding it every where. If you do 15k a year in seven years that's 105,000 miles. Something is bound to go wrong in 100k. If you are just riding it on weekends probably not. It also depends if something does go wrong are they going to be looking for something to void your claim, example- oil receipts for the past 5 years. Also if your motor does blow up what price do you put on the possible months you don't have your bike.

Since Buells come with a 2 year warranty you should divide the $2059 by the 5 additional years. Comes out to around $35, still doesn't sound bad looking at it that way.

Don't you have to pay a $50 deductible every time you use the warranty?

I suppose it might be worth it if you do a LOT of riding, but on average most people would be better off to put aside $35 a month and let it collect interest and use that for repairs when they come.

It is only worth it IF you have a good Buell tech at your dealership, and you are not fond of wrenching for yourself.

The assurance an extended warranty would provide sounds great, especially when you look at it as a small monthly charge. However, in the real world it is currently very difficult to find a good Buell dealership. I've been on this forum for a couple of years now, and still only know of a handful of dealerships that will give you a fair shake scattered across the country. I don't know how many times I've read where a BWB member had to ask for assistance from one of our connected members just to get what they should have gotten in the first place.

Just remember, just because you purchase this warranty does not mean you're actually going to get service. The majority of dealerships will fight you tooth and nail before they will honor their own warranty.

I took my bike in for warranty work only once. My integrity was called into question, I was treated rudely, deprived of my bike for two weeks, and made to pay transportation costs from 150 miles away when I was assured repeatedly before I wrote the check they would come get my bike if there was ever a problem. After two weeks of feeling sick to my stomach thinking my two-month old bike was toast and having to go all the way to the president of the local H/D dealership network to find someone that would talk some sense to me, I got my bike back damaged worse than I brought it to them. It took two more weeks to get it back again after they swore I damaged it myself.

Know what my major catastrophic breakage was that they accused me of causing damage to that wasn't covered by the warranty? I spent four weeks arguing about tightening the primary compensator nut! When I finally got them to do it, I got the bike back with too much primary fluid, improperly installed shifter linkage, scratched primary cover, and a busted clutch cable housing. When I called them back about the damage, they basically called me a liar, argued with me for a week, finally picked the bike up again, and kept it two more weeks. The second time around I discovered that they merely smeared a little touch-up paint on the huge scratch on my primary cover and still didn't get the primary fluid level right nor did they install the shifter properly. They did however manage to install a new clutch cable to replace the one they sliced.

Now I have the shop manual and have since then had to tighten the primary compensator nut myself because they didn't do a very good job on the repair. Funny, they're trained professionals and their repair lasted about 2,500 miles before it came loose again. I tightened it myself about 7,000 miles ago and it's still tight.

Oh yeah, I also took it to another dealership once because it was running rough while idling at stop lights. While still under warranty, they charged me $150+ to install new spark plugs. When I went to pick it up and found out what their diagnosis was, I informed them that the bike actually had brand new spark plugs and showed them the receipt for the plugs I had installed. Then I solved my own problem in their maintenance bay when I discovered the problem was a loose battery cable. Needless to say, I got my $150 back and kept their plugs too.

Never again...NOBODY touches my bike anymore, not even my old lady.

My hubby purchased the extended warranty for his 2006 firebolt in May 2006. In April of 2007 it was returned as a lemon (needed a new engine) and traded it in for a TT. We got just over $1000 back from the warranty.

Would we purchase the warranty again? NO.

I don't know why a dealership wouldn't want to honor the ESP. It's not like it's out of their pocket - they get reimbursed by the ESP company.

So really, it's just like another customer, although there is a bit more paperwork involved.

Dealing with warranty companies on the dealer side can be a little harrowing as well, just FYI. It's not ALWAYS the dealer who is coming up with wierd stuff to tell the customer.

Tom, the owner, wrote a little article for the summer Infomer (newsletter) that covers a bit about warranty. It'll be out prob. next week.

Like someone said up there, DaveS maybe, the ESP is a total waste of money if you never use it. Unfortunately, you won't know you never use it until you never use it. Just like life insurance. Sure hope I don't need to use THAT for a good long time.

Still nice to have though.

I just picked up my New Uly a few weeks back and I paid for the 5 year ESP with tires/wheels. I dropped an extra 1000 but you know something.
1. I dont plan on turning a wrench on this bike, thats what I have my fine Chevrolet products for. Its not that I cant do the work, I just get tired of doing the work. 2 Just like Daves pointed out, at the cost of replacing an engine or tranny, why not invest an extra 10 bucks a month in the loan.
3. It comes with roadside assistance.

So of course lets say the dealership screws up your bike more in the process, well revert back to point number 1. I have no problem taking my bike back to the dealership 5 days a week, hell they have to get it right eventually.

My price chart says a 7 year ESP with Tire & Wheel should retail for around $1,859.

(That's for XB models, NEW. Used are more expensive.)

In NJ, it's taxable, so with tax you're looking at $1,989.13.

Pretty close to $2,000.

Of course, as he says, if it's more than I think 90 days, it's an additional $150.00.

So that price is definitely ball-park.

It would have saved me a lot of money and grief, During winter riding this last year, I had to replace 3 tires due to nails (too close to side wall to repair by several accounts) at 120 a tire, and the labor to do it, the roadside tire package that is only available with the ESP would have paid for itself. But then I do ride probably where I shouldnt be ;)

They must have raised the price since I left the biz.

Chris, you have nothing to worry about, your dealer is Buell of Appleton.
Just request that Ernie does all the work on your bike.
The other techs are good too but Ernie knows the Buells inside and out.

Well like Daves said, it is just like life insurance. You never know when it may be needed. Since the cost is about $35 per month during the extra 5 years, I think I'll feel better about the purchase with the EW.

Is there a deductible with every warranty visit?

A friend of mine has a 4 month old Harley cruiser. He just picked up a nail in his rear tire while on the freeway. By the time he was able to safely move to the shoulder, his rear tire was cut up by the rim. I assume if he had the warranty it would have covered that.

I'll see if I can find out from the BBB how well the dealership handles their services and warranty work. If they don't do it well, I'll forgo the EW and just save my money for doing my own repairs.

Thanks everyone!
