"I know motorcycling is dangerous. I just don't think that justifies completely divesting myself of responsibility for my own
safety when there are things I can do to mitigate the danger."

No blaming from me, I reiterate what the quote refers to, responsibility. Why wait for these actions to be mandated.

One of my friends that teaches motorcycle safety courses has a saying he tells each class about riding gear

"Only cover the skin you would like to keep"

There was a question up there somewhere about good safe boots that don't make you look like Ricky Racer... I was looking for the same thing. And I wanted an affordable set... I can't afford $200 or $300 boots.

They are out there, I found them, but the (common and well known) web site where I found them is not a board sponsor, nor is the (common and well known) manufacturer.

They had over ankle and over calf versions of the same boot, both right around $100. I got the over calf, and they work really well and I will appreciate them if I ever need them, but the over ankle only would be far more comfortable for longer rides.

They aren't super armored, but they are very heavy leather with hidden impact plates in critical places. I wanted something without zippers, and these had just two buckles as well.

So they are out there, but you *will* have to look.
