Well, ready to play some more with the X1. Looking to have frame powdercoated. Anybody know someone reliable? Anyone ever had problems with it, i.e. peeling, chipping or other quality defects? Would like to do it over winter and hope to be back together for season after. Ideas and opinions welcome. Thanks!

There are lots of powdercoaters here in So Cal - but it's popular enough that you should be able to find someone local without too much trouble.

You will save $ (usually) if you thoroughly clean and media-blast the frame before you take it to get the powder coat done. Keep in mind that ANY grease, oil, rust or anything else other than clean bare metal will adversely effect the ability of the powdercoat to adhere to the frame.

As far as recommendations go - try checking with any of your independant bike shops, custom bike or Hot Rod shops, etc. to see if there are certain powdercoaters that they use (or DON'T use!) as it's likely that they will have had experience in the area.

I'm pretty sure the frame you have IS already powdercoated from BMC - if so, you can use an industrial strength "paint & epoxy" remover to start the removal process. I've found that regular paint stripper, like you'd get at home depot, isn't very effective on powdercoat. Some of it is even tough enough to resist sand blasting for a while!

Unless you are going to go black, prepare yourself for some tough decisions - there's about a zillion powdercoat colors available, including some really cool custom effects and pearlescents!

Good Luck with your project, and most important -

Go to any monument place that sells gravestones. They all have a walk-in bead blasting booth and most do frame stripping for about $25. That's how i prepped my XL frame.I then took it to nearby Technikote in Cumberland RI who powdercoated it for $175.

If I had another large oven, I would say send it to me... but, right now, I cant do anything much bigger than the diameter of a rim...

Second, recommend.... Classic Coatings, they do/did Buell's powder work...

Third, you can blast the frame.....

Or, get a GOOD air craft remover, and past it on, let it sit.... it will start to bubble up the powder...

remove as much as possible...

Then, blast the frame...

The metal NEEDS to be absolutely clean before the application of power...

Normally, I blast, blow iff with air, double check fitting protection(threads, bungs, etc), and move right to power...

NO oils, from skin, or anything can be present, and if the humidty is too high, its a PITA as well....

MY 2 cents...
