I crashed my 2004 XB12s on Friday the 13th. The insurance company had the dealer pick it up. Today I get a call from the insurance guy telling me he cut a two thousand and some odd dollar check, two party, me and the dealer have to sign it, no big deal. I few minutes later the dealer calls and says they have the check and I have to come down and sign it. I tell him, no problem, when the bike is done I'll sign it when I pick it up.
Heres where it gets good.
He tells me I have to sign it before they can order the parts. I didnt argue, I told him I would call him tomorrow. I have never had a bike fixed before, but have never heard of any place asking you to sign the insurance check BEFORE they order the parts. This is one of the oldest HD dealers in Wisconsin and they cant take a measley $2000.00 out of their check book and order the parts. I may be missing something, but for the live of me I cant figure out what. Tomorrow Im going to call and ask to speak with the GM.
Your thoughts and opinions, please.

Chuck

Never heard of that myself. Wonder if they think you'll bail on the bike and are worried they wont get paid and stuck with the bill for repair parts. Could also be SOP set up by their attorneys, liability?

Chuck, Hals or Ukes?
Yeah, the dealerships don't want to order parts, and then have you decide to take the bike elsewhere. That's pretty much S.O.P. IMHO.

As long as you are not signing off on the job itself, I dont see an issue...

BUT, call your insurance company FIRST, and see what they say....

when i wrecked, the dealer wrote up an estimate, sent the est. along with some pics to the insurance company.

after multiple emails and phone calls the insurance company adjuster said he never got the est. and pics.

had the dealer send them again.

after more emails and phone calls the insurance company adjuster said he never got the est and pics.

bitched at the adjuster, talked to his manager, got a new adjuster.

had the dealer send the pics and estimate AGAIN.

the new adjuster called me and approved everything a day after he was put on the job. no idea why the first guy was delaying for three weeks.

they faxed a copy of the two party check to the H-D dealer and sent me the check. the H-D dealer ordered the parts once they saw the faxed copy of the check. i endorsed the check and sent it to the H-D dealer. i didnt really see any reason not to, most parts places make you pay before they will order any parts. i thought the dealer was being helpful and nice by not making me pay the $500 deductible before they would order parts.

wait a couple weeks, one false alarm drive of 180 miles because a shop employee lied to me about my bike being done. and finally all the parts are in. except an o-ring for the fuel pump. still waiting on that.

because of the employee lying to me, the H-D dealer is going to deliver my bike to me once it is done. hopefully i will only be two months without a bike through the whole process.

Nothing wrong with that. I have my bike in at Appleton, WI Harley/Buell and they had to do the same thing when they got the check from the insurance company. They just put the balance of the check on my account there and started ordering parts. If there is more that they have to order, they order it and send a supplement report into the insurance company to cut another check to make up the costs. Like Steve said, I think it is just S.O.P.

that's standard operating procedure these days! because if you don't sign a release to have the work done, there is a chance they might not get paid for the work. I had this happen to me when I had to have my M2 Cyclone repaired after my wreck.

Steve, its at Ukes, thats where I bought it.
I just thought it was a little strange, but apparently I must be wrong. Last winter I got nailed by a car on the freeway to the tune of about $8000.00 damage to my car and his insurance company just wrote a check to the body shop and I signed it when I picked the car up, so I thought this was a little odd.

Steve, I still didnt get any sliders but I didnt need them (dont know how that happened!) but I will just incase something like this happens again. I will say that Im glad I put on the frame pucks, they did there job.
Thanks for the input everyone.

I would call my insurance company and ask them what the SOP is for your situation.

You got a 2-party check for only $2000?

I did some damage to my car about a year ago now, I think it was a little over $3000 after my deductible. My name was the only one on the check.

Actually, come to think of it I might be lying and got paid much less than that. I can't remember...

Nevermind.

Our shop is full of over 20 collision crash repairs. (its been a buzy summer for laydowns, parking lot drops and low sides) They are using it as a way to prioritize which bikes get worked on and finished first. Gotta start somewhere, and they are going with the paying insurance companies first. Sucks to be with out a bike, sucks worse to have an insurance company that layers redtape beyond the repairs.

Heck, I should of just paid them cash, its only $2000.00 and change. The bike may be done before I can ride it anyway. Old bodies dont heal as fast as they used to!

It just didnt sit well with me, Ive never heard of it before, but it seems to be somewhat SOP. Oh well, gotta go with the flow.

Go ahead and sign the check as requested in good faith. They need to know that they are going to get paid before commencing on all that expense. Do you really blame them? It only takes once where someone will/can not pay for them to learn their lesson. It is just a good business practice and nothing personal.

Insurance companies almost always issue a two party check when the vehicle is financed to ensure that the vehicle is returned to its original condition. If there is no lien holder they should have issued the check to you alone.

My Uly is in the shop with $4,000 damage and they ordered about $2,000 worth of parts with out any deposit at all. Pretty good guys.

Bike isnt finance, paid cash.
Its water under the bridge at this point. I just remember when someone hit my Mustang a few years ago, and more recently, this past winter when some kid in an AWD Evo thought that just because he had AWD he could stop that good too...he was wrong, and hit my car. In both cases, I didnt have to sign anything until the cars were fixed.

As you say it's water under the bridge but...you'd be screwed if you we're buying used parts, fixing it yourself or not repairing everything. Your insurance company didn't do right by you. The shop had every right to ask for a deposit but it should have been up to you to provide it.

I'm hoping the bike and I will be healed/repaired at the same time. Uly needs a new frame-big dent where the puck was.
