OK I'm getting ready to paint the mid section of a chin spoiler and I need to drill out the rivets holding it together. Any tips or ticks to doing this properly. I'm thinking the rivets may heat up and melt the plastic. American Sport Bike sells the rivet replace kit (allen screws and locknuts), any experience with these?

Drill through at a slow bit speed to keep heat down. Hold or retain the backside of the rivet with a pair of pliers (vise grips work great as you don't have to hold onto them once applied) to prevent spinning. Slow and careful, you should be able to remove without incident. Did it to my 99 X1 no problem. Used rivets to put it back together when I was done repainting.

W/O knowing the dia. of the rivet shank-- Center punch the rivet head, then drill into it, down to the surface of the surrounding material. Put a pin punch of the same dia as the drill into the hole, and snap the rivet head off. The rivet shank is then easy (most of the time) to push out.

I did the same, Go to the hardware store for your new s.s. nuts and bolts. will only cost you a couple dollors. I think I paid like 3.50 for mine when I did it.

If a rivet starts spinning, hold the drill at a slight angle, maybe 5-10 degrees off, speed it up, use lighter pressure, and it will take a little chunk out of the rivet head each time the drill comes around. Eventually it will fall off. This is the same concept that is used to destroy the sockets on Torx screws. :>)

If you are drilling out 1/8th" pop rivets use a 7/64ths" drill, faster speed, and light pressure. Follow up with an 1/8th" drill if the head does not fall off.

Like they said, hold the rivet from the back side with visegrips, punch out the rivet center pin with a hammer and a small punch, and use a new or a very sharp drill bit to drill the head off.

If your drill bit is sharp you can go slower to keep from building up heat that can melt the plastic. If you see melting start happening stop drilling and throw some water on it, then start again.

What are the sizes of the bolts and nuts that you are using?

Quick question. I am trying to remove the rivets holding the front spoiler in place. I have drilled through the rivet so the shank has been removed but I can't get the rivet to separate any ideas? I was using a 1/8' metal drill bit but was thinking of going to the next size up to see if that does it.
