My heart stopped when I saw this news story:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,281392,00.html

Has anyone here ever met Bobby?

So, why am I posting this here? It's simple, the more people that know about Bobby, the better.

________________________________

I'll start off by saying that Bobby Model is one of the finest people I have met in my life.

I briefly met Bobby in January of 2001 at the Rio Blanco basecamp of the Fitzroy Massif, in Patagonia, Argentina.

In the crucible of a climbing basecamp, naturally gifted people will rise above the sea of narcissistic jerks. Bobby is one of these truly gifted people. He has a quiet, unspoken presence about him that pulls people in like gravity. People will follow Bobby without knowing why.

When you get back to civilization, and follow the link on his business card http://www.m-11.com , it's then that you start to fully realize the full breadth of everything he had done. From talking with him, you would never know the half of his accomplishments. From talking with him, you would never know the half of his commitment to humanity.

Bobby gave a damn about the people of Darfur long before it became the celebre du jour of all these limousine activists. He took things to heart enough that he moved to Africa.

It's been a long time since I last visited his website to see what he was up to. His website hasn't really changed since I first saw it in 2001. My supposition is that he cares more about what he's covering than his own self promotion.

Latest report taken from a South african Newspaper

US photographer 'now stable'
12/06/2007 07:50 - (SA)

Johannesburg - The condition of an US international adventure photographer who is fighting for his life after a chunk of concrete smashed through the windshield of his car and hit him in the head, has stabilised, a hospital spokesperson said on Monday.

Bobby Model, 34, was still in intensive care but was stable, said Sonja Muller, client service manager for the Vergelegen Medi-Clinic.

He was in a car driven by his sister when he was struck on Thursday afternoon near the Monwabisi resort, which is close to Khayelitsha, one of Cape Town's many sprawling poor township settlements. His sister, Faith, 32, was not hurt.

Many of Cape Town's busy highways are notorious for spates of stone-throwing - attacks with seemingly no clear purpose. Last year, a man was killed after a brick was hurled through his windshield.

Attempted murder

It was not immediately clear whether anyone threw the object that struck Model, and police opened an investigation for attempted murder.

The Cape Argus reported on Monday that Makhaya Mani, community safety spokesperson for the Western Cape province, said authorities were still determining whether it was a stone-throwing incident or whether a piece of concrete had fallen off a truck.

Model, of Cody, Wyoming, was in South Africa on vacation. A contributor for National Geographic Adventure Magazine, he lives in Kenya and had worked in several war zones, including Sudan. He is also an avid rock climber.

On Monday, an e-mail message from Faith's partner, Hans-Peter Bakker, was posted on an internet forum site devoted to climbing that has been keeping members updated about Model's accident.

The message on the Supertopo website said Model's condition was "unchanged" and that Model's mother, Anne, had arrived and his father, Bob, was expected.

Last year, Model was named by the National Geographic Society as one of its "emerging explorers," an annual honour extended to "dynamic personalities who are making a significant contribution to world knowledge through exploration."

A 1997 graduate of the University of Wyoming, Model began rock climbing as a young teenager. He was part of a Wyoming team that completed the first free ascent of the East Face of Pakistan's Trango Tower.

Model appeared on the cover of National Geographic when the magazine published an account of that expedition.

Let's hope and pray he makes it. Two SA tragedies in a few days is really sad.
