In early may I took my brothers sportster to him in California. Uhauled to San Diego, then took the PCH 1 up the coast to San Francisco- took 2.5 days on the 750 mile trip, hell of a ride. Flew back and decided to get my own bike - Got a 06 xb9sx off ebay. The bikes in North Carolina, so after the awesome roadtrip in cali, I decided on another from picking the bike up- so I fly down next monday to get the bike, and am riding back. Want some advice on route whats the best route to take back to Michigan (scenic and best roads to ride, what to see- twisties) from Charlotte, NC on up to South East Michigan. I want about a 50-50 twisties and freeway ride, to get home in under 2 days. My planned route so far- Taking the 601 or Interstate 77 to 21 through Roaring Gap to either 93- onta 16, or staying on 21 through Mt Rogers National rec-area eventually ending up on 52 to 23 and on up into Toledo. Shoot out ideas of changes I should make, or which one of those two routes I should do, or anything else. Ps, glad to be in the Buell family -Jeff  | ||

From Deals Gap 129 (awesome) in Tn. take 321 (great) to Boone NC then turn North on 421 (awesome). That will get you to Bristol. Then take 58 (great) known as the "crooked road". Someone else can send you from there.  | ||

Deals gap is famous. If you've never been, you might want to take the advice above. There are some great roads over there. It is not however, really on your way home. Another option would be to head north into Virginia, and then north west into West Virginia. There are some fantastic roads up there, and you can parallel the interstate, which will allow you to choose either twisties or highway, depending on your mood. Interstate 77 will take you from Charlotte directly into some fantastic road at the NC/VA border. I ride up there occasionally. Have all kinds of fun down south. Once you hit Ohio, take freeways through Ohio and through Michigan. No roads up here will compare with what's down South. That should get you about 50/50. | ||

I just reread your post and see you mentioned 16. That is a fantastic highway. BTW, you mention deciding to get your own bike. Is this your first bike? We might recommend different roads if you're just learning to ride. | ||

First road bike of my own, yup- Ridden motorcross since 1992- so 15 years experience on a bike, then about 2000 miles on the road thus far over the last 4 years- 800 in the last month on the Pacific Coast trip. So still moderately learning yes, but i dont plan to push it on this trip- i should be ok? | ||

The Cherohola Highway is actually a better ride then Deals Gap (IMHO), but Deals Gap is a kind of social thing that is pretty neat as well. 52 is a good choice. Its a good relaxed and scenic ride. A pleasing way to cover ground that isn't just interstate. Cut up east of Cincinnati coming up through some really squiggly lines in northern Kentucky. Those things are like paved goat trails, and some beautiful views. You could come up through the Lebanon area (where I live) and head north. You can cut over to I-75 whenever you get too tired to sigh see and just want to make good time. Any further west then Lebanon, and you are in Cincinnati urban snarl and might as well just be on the interstate. Feel free to drop in and rest for a bit if you do end up coming up through Lebanon... | ||

If you want to make the trip in two days Deal's Gap isn't really an option. If I were going to make that trip in two days I'd take I77 north to US421 and roll with it. I think it stops in northern Indiana, but I've never been up that far on it. | ||

Just playing with google:  There is a state park near Logan, WV which looks interesting. They have camping. folks, this is as "cosmic" as it gets. me 'n D were up early this morning, painting on the house before the temps got unbearable. about 2 o'clock we headed out on the scoot, beatin' the heat, sniffin' out cool roads. we headed down the Parkway for about a half hour, then hung a right on Glade Valley Road (South Carolina), a twisty little gem i discovered a few weeks ago and had promised to show Denise. Glade Valley Road dumps you out a bit south of Sparta, and i pulled into the first gas station we saw as we were low on avgas. cool beans, there's a black XB-S Lightning at one of the pumps when we pull up, and a young man buttoning up shop and getting ready to roll. "Cool Buell!" i said. "Where ya from?" "Michigan! I just flew down to Charlotte today to pick up my new bike, and I'm on my way home with it." i was stunned. it took me a second, as i hadn't read this thread in several days. then it came to me. "You're Marshj!" the odds are truly about a bazillion to one, but of all crazy, impossible, "meant to be" things, we ran into one Jeffrey Patrick Marsh this afternoon in the middle of Nowhere, North Carolina, a meeting that defies all odds, logic and luck. we had a great, brief visit (didn't want to hold him up too long, as he's gunnin' for being in Ann Arbor, Michigan by sundown tomorrow), and we all marveled at how something like this could happen. safe travels, Jeff, it was a pleasure and a treat to meet you, and welcome to the Wonderful World of Buells and BadWeB.
