Here in New York (as well in other states)it is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Since NYS does not seem to do much in promoting it, I've been working with area media to fill in the void. Funny thing, folks are always complaining that the News only wants to do stories on wild bikers and crashes; all I did was send them an email asking if they would have any interest in doing a segment on awareness and all have said yes. I work for a rather large company and there are several motorcyclists employed there. Every month is a new safety message about this and that, but never anything motorcycle related. Finally after 10 years of me trying to set something up, they recognize that I'm not full of BS and the safety flavor of this month was Motorcycle Awareness. Did I get any credit for it? Of course not, but at least the message is finally out there. That should stop all the cagers fighting over spaces from trying to run me over for this month at least. | ||

There are also quite a few motorcyclists here so cagers do a pretty good job of watching for us. The company is all about safety as the number one priority and our bonuses depend on it, so people do a good job of watching for others in the parking lot and garage. Once I leave the site, driving in New Mexico is more like Mad Max in the Road Warrior and all bets are off. | ||

I noticed that in Atlanta Georgia area they had WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES posted on the electronic traffic monitoring signs ... Something like a 100% wreck rate for riders in the Atl area. Bought my first bike (883 hugger) from a guy in Atlanta that had moved to the area and was too afraid to ride it. I too am now or would be to scared to ride in the Atl area. Too many cagers to watch out for. | ||

When I was leaving college and driving through Pennsylvania, I remember seeing an electronic message board on the highway. It said "watch out for motorcyclists." - I thought that was great and was puzzled as to why I did not see it after that anywhere. | ||

I live in Atlanta and ride in the traffic all the time, on 285 and 400 too. Glitch lives there and rides downtown to the Coca-Cola building every day. It can be scary but it's mostly cool. I have seen the signs as well and they say "Share the Road, Watch for Motorcycles" | ||

I've been seeing one motorcycle a day knocked off it's wheels in traffic while splitting lanes in NYC. Cute yellow Range Rover bounced a GSXR into the wall right before my eyes on the Northbound FDR yesterday. Please be careful. . . my picture collection is growing by leaps and bounds. Court | ||

I've always thought lane splitting was stupid. I'll sit in traffic and bake rather than risk it, especially in Atlanta. I guy on a GSXR flew right by me on the shoulder this morning. I never saw or heard him until he was right next to me door. I just shook my head and hoped that no one would decide to pull out in front of him. | ||

I've got one of those make-up-your-own-slogan stick-on vinyl windshield shades across the bottom of the back window of my truck. It says "WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES." It's my own private driver training program. :-) I suggested to the AMA Gift Shop that they have some made, but I don't know if they ever did it. It's easy to do if you can find one of those shades with the letters loose so you can concoct your own slogan. You'll run out of "O's" so you'll need to trim the tails off a couple of "Q's". Simple. As for lane splitting, it's illegal everywhere but in California and it's risky even where it's legal. A safer and better idea is how they do things in most of Europe. Motorcycles get to advance to the front of the line at stops and cage drivers allow them to go on first when the lights go green. It seems to me that there is no reason why it would not work just as well in the States. | ||

Atlanta has the worst, most inconsiderate drivers (men, women, all races, Northerners and Southerners alike) of any city I've ever lived (in the US). I'm riding through Atlanta on the connector today to get to N. Georgia, and I'm already dreading it. If the traffic slows down and stops... I'll be shaking and baking in the sun until it starts up again. | ||

I was thinking of carbon fibering up my XB9, but decided to leave it yeller for a while just because its so visible. I'm still seeing alot of people pulling out in front of me. One hand on the wheel, one hand on the cell phone is going to hurt me, that's a 100% sure thing. | ||

Off topic but safety related. Anyone aware of any statistics on motorcycle involved accidents during rainy weather vs dry weather? I was wondering if on a per mile traveled basis wet weather biking is significantly more dangerous? | ||
