Anybody have any experience with the cheap little electrical dirt bikes showing up at the big box shops?

They are clearly a toy, but they have rubber tires and a primitive suspension.

The neighbors have a little electric jeep that the kids have a lot of fun on, and I was wondering if that little electric bike would add a fun little toy to the mix.

It would be for riding around a suburban dead end circle, the front yard, and a graded open lot. I know it won't be an XR50 (nor would it cost as much), I just wondering if it would be reduced to junk in hours. It would be for a 4 and 6 year old mainly, though an 8 year old would probably play on it a little, and there is a fairly precocious 2 year old that would take a crack at it if not sufficiently supervised : )

They are only $120 or something, so they don't have to be *that* good.

I am sure I would love it if I was 6 years old.

I picked up an electric street bike w/ training wheels for my 4yr old. It's capable of about 7 mph and is pretty solidly built. We had a previous one that had similar construction, but a much slower motor. Although it's covered w/ formed plastic parts to make it look like a Harley, under the plastic facade is a pretty solid tube frame. The manufacturer says it's built to hold up to 80 lbs.

Haven't had it out much. Gave it to him for x-mas - foul weather since then so not much opportunity for him to ride it. The few times he has, it's scared him (since it's so much quicker than what he's used to) and now takes quite a bit of coaxing to get him on it. My 7 yr old loves it, however.

Bottom line, the ones w/ steel tube sub-frames will take some pretty good abuse. The motors seem to be pretty bullet proof - just a matter of keeping the battery charged.

I've got a couple of the battery powered razor pocket bikes for my boys. No regrets. The are quick (top out at 15mph) and run for about 45 min (perfect for a kids attention span).

Razor has two electric dirtbike models out this year. If those aren't the ones you are referring to - check them out.

Oh, and Razor has a real good selection of spare / repair parts available for fixins and they answer their phones.

Yup... those are the ones. Thanks for the feedback.

15mph is pretty quick! Hopefully the dirt bikes are geared for more torque and less speed. Gotta get the kids some gear....

FYI I just picked up an XR80 for the nephew on craigslist for a little under $400. Gas is the way to go IMHO.

XR's are the shit

gas is better yes, but the cops let us alone on the electrics - no noise, no complaints.

also, no hot parts for the kids to get burned on. no smelling up the car with spilt gas or oil...

pretty much all fun and no hassle

True True

When I first bought it for him I took it for a ride. My first thought was, man this thing has no balls... LOL that same bike scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Brings back soooo many memories. I guess years of riding CR 250's takes a toll on you. LOL

I bought it for him and showed it to him right before I took off overseas for work. I can't wait to see his face when he rides it for the first time. The kid has never been on a gas bike. He only has those electric ones. Once his little brother saw it though he gave me the nastiest look. He was like where the F is mine Uncle Jim???? I didn't think the little one would be into it but he wants one more than the older one.

Anyone got a 50 for sale?????

I have an atc 50 and an xr50 my 5 and 6 year old ride. They have a blast. My daughter hates her helmet....My son thinks the helmet is cool.

It is fun to watch them chase each other round the yard.

: ) I still have scars healing from a yamaha 80 that I borrowed (with the intent to buy) for the kids. Scared the crap out of them, left me deeply scarred (literally... right arm... I had to dive for the kill switch and catch a kid as the bike was accelerating right at me)

An XR50 would be the way to start if we had some land...

My brother and I had a 40cc Moped as kids that would run 25mph. We put 20,000 miles on that thing

Note the under-slung exhaust!

Finally am getting around to posting...

You were right Midnyte, the Razor is a great little bike with a great selection of parts and great support.

http://www.razor-help.com/razor-mx350-dirt-rocket.html

I got it from Amazon.com (free shipping for items over $100, which is good on this thing, as it's 70 lbs and $40 to ship). I think it was $169 or something, and may have gone up since then (for good reason, these things rock).

Buell Dirt Bike

The kids absolutely love it. It's got a real (though non damped) suspension, a proportional throttle, and real tires / wheels / controls. The low end unit (this one) has only a handlebar lever rear brake. Higher end units carry more batteries and have a disk front brake.

Its a little small (but very friendly) for my oldest (9 years old, about 5'9").

Ben on razor

Its absolutely perfect for my 7 year old, who was riding like a pro about 6 seconds after he got on it. One lap around the dead end, and he immediately pointed it at the curb for a jump).

It goes close to 15 mph, it really moves. Runs for quite a while (40 minutes?) on a charge. Not enough torque to climb steep hills (which is too bad, the thing could really be a fun little kids exploration bike).

It also has a proper intelligent charger, so the kids just hook it up and leave it until they ride again without worrying about killing a $50 battery. It stops charging when the bike is charged.

The website has a great selection of parts for reasonable prices.

Downsides?

It takes several hours to charge back up.

The first rear tire was used up in 1 week... and new tires were backordered. As the kids learn better control and stop skidding the rear tire, they should last longer, but I would still not be suprised if they rip through 1 a month. They are about $12 to $17. Hopefully newer harder compound tires will appear.

It's all steel, so while its just about indestructable, it's heavy. The kids can handle it, but it is heavy.

I highly recommend one for the kids, but order new tires with the bike in advance. Wish I had something like this when I was a kid!
