I have a 2000 X1 Racing stripe with factory race kit, forcewinder, and power commander. This season Ive been having some problems with the ignition system. At first I just thought it was the kickstand sensor kuz the bike would shut off sometimes. Today I took it out for a ride and got stranded. When I came out of the store to start the bike the key would not turn in the ignition. Finally after messing w\ the key for a good 10 mins it turned. The bad part is that the bike still wont start. The gagues light up and the horn works, but the fuel pump doesnt run, and the bike doesnt even want to fire. Ive been having some trouble with fouling plugs the past couple years, seems like i go through 5 sets a season. This could also be unrelated. What should I do with my ignition problem? Is it even a ignition problem? I was going to take the bike to a dealer to get serviced (oil change and such) but im afraid if i take it there for everything i wont b able to afford the parts\labor. I can work on it myself, and would rather do that anyways. Please let me know what you think! I am eager to get back on the road and enjoy this wonderful weather!

A good place to start is the ignition switch... replace it. You may get lucky and that will all it will be... but I'm sure it's toast. I just replaced the ignition switch on my '99 S3. It happens.

Check under the tank and see if the harness is unpluged it is the one that runs the fuel pump. (had that happen once)

Custom Chrome sells a three wire barell ign switch that works with your X1. You will have to carry two keys if thats not a problem.

Check your kickstand safety switch. I had the same problem with my 2000 X1 a few years back. Full power everywhere accept fuel pump and ignition. Remove the switch and connect the wires together. As for the plugs fouling, make sure you are not getting moisture in your plug wire boots. I also had that issue. the plugs weren't fouling but misfiring which made me think they were fouling because the fuel kept pumping into the misfired cylinder. usually happened after washing the beast or riding in fog/light rain.

I had similar problems, but it was the neutral sensor, the bike thought it was in gear and so it would not pressurize or start with the clutch engaged, pull the clutch and see if it helps. Yours should be close to mine, the plug in is on the right side of the bike, just wiggle that wire and see if it pressurizes the fuel injection. How do you like that power commander?
