If white folks had W.E.T., Rev. Sharpton would be screaming.

True, since the only show on it would be the "Brady Bunch"!

I have a rather unique perspective on this issue, as I am not just another white guy on the outside looking in. In the early 70's I attended and graduated from (and later taught at) a traditional black university in KY. It was a lot like living in Spike Lee's movie, "School Daze". I was the only white dude in my class that really tried to have a social life at this school, and I know exactly what it feels like being a decided minority.

I remember my naive belief that the kids would see that I was cool, so they would accept me, like we had done the black kids at my high school. That was my first reality check. I felt like I had to earn it, and even then I was only partially successful with some people and not at all with others.

Never-the-less, I had many black friends at school, some of whom were my room mates, and they helped me through the tougher times and racial sensitivities...but it was still tough. Pretty soon I realized that there were just going to be some folks that hated me because I was white. It taught me a lot about humility and gave me an insight into what black folks had been going through for years.

Just a few years before that, while I was in the junior high in the mid-60's in the same town, the students had demonstrated for equal rights as they were not allowed to eat in public restaurants. I remember those days of institutionalized discrimination like they were yesterday. I can remember feeling the pangs of racial injustice...it was almost enough to turn me into a liberal.

The biggest issue at college was when I started dating some of the co-eds...whoa! It is a universal thing for guys to try and protect the women that they perceive as being in their own group...whether they knew them or not. There were some dudes who really resented me for this...it wasn't considered too cool, if you know what I mean. Some of the girls couldn't stand the pressure from the other students (the other girls were the worst), and so they would break off our relationship. Others were much stronger and told the rest where to get off.

I would take my dates to the local movies and restaurants, and yeah, we got some stares from the white folks, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was much worse from the black kids, much worse. My parents have always accepted my girlfriends, white or black, as I always had black kids over to our house before I went to college. Later, I was married to a black woman that I met at work for 8 years, so I have deep roots with her and her family.

However, none are deeper than with my 34 year old daughter from a brief romance. I didn't even know about her until she was 28. Her mother was only here for a month and then moved away to another city and married a man who thought my daughter was his. I knew she had a kid around that time, so I was suspicious, but she lied to me about whose baby it was.

I have been close to my daughter and 2 grandkids for going on seven years now, even though they live 2 hours away at Ft. Knox. The military is a much more diverse setting than the general population. But even then I have heard my 34 year old daughter and her friends use street language like Imus was mocking all the time. They call each other "niggahs", and use the word as a noun, adjective, adverb, and pronoun...a very versatile word indeed. They make what I consider derogatory comments regularly about darker skinned blacks who look more African, with their "nappy hair" or "ashy" skin. She knows I do not approve, because I have told her about it. They really are cruel sometimes. If I had got the chance to raise her, things would have been different.

I asked them just how much black blood that one had to have to belong to their insult "club" and my daughter indicated it with her thumb pointing to the first joint of her little finger. I asked her who established this test, and she was clueless. I explained that back in slavery days and after that whites had imposed that standard upon light skinned blacks who were trying to "pass" as whites, as a means of racial discrimination. I asked her why blacks were so ready to incorporate that racist standard into their own sub-culture...again she was clueless. I know I spend a lot of time preaching and teaching her and my grandkids how not to be racist towards other black folks, hispanics or whites.

Their comments make Imus' pale (pun intended) by comparison...

Greenlantern & Buellinachinashop - you two have me about in tears!

Greenlantern - I totally enjoy your point of view. Great posts, very educated. Although since my family is of Irish descent I think I may start putting "Anglo Saxon" in the race box on job apps. Maybe I can get a minority angle going.

Buellinachinashop - I'm still searching for "white history" month. I bet that would fire up Sharpton & Jesse Jackson! Oh, the inhumanity!

I guess that's what I like about motorcycles, all in all everyone gets along when they are on their bike.

Greenlantern sez:

Black America is howling for all it is worth...with every personality on the tube giving Imus the whipping of his life.

Actually, it's pretty much "Black Media" and any other outlet that's having a slow news day that is giving Don the wuppin'.

Imus is on over 70 stations including the morning simulcast on MSNBC. HE has had most every Presidential candidate on his show at one time or another.

Actually, I have had the TV on since 6:00 AM this morning, and it seems that all of the networks, including the 24 hour "news" channels (even FOX!) were bringing in every black personality who I have ever seen on TV to interview them about the Imus comment. The last time they had that many black folks on TV in one day was when Coretta Scott King died, or the replay of Roots...I am not sure. They even had Maya Angelou on MSNBC, and her opinion came closest to mirroring mine (of course, she's old like me!).

I even watched ol' longface Imus himself for a while on MSNBC...what a contrite set, although he was still making fun of the fat sports guy. I think the guy was really caught unaware about how unfunny the skit was going to be until after wards. I am not saying he didn't deserve his whipping though, and he should be charged extra for his stupidity.

I have to admit, I do watch Imus in the mornings some, as he has great interviews with a variety of people. He is more of a progressive than most folks give him credit for, as he had Harold Ford on his show every few days before the last election and after, when he was calling the racist ad (Harold, call me!) that Ford's (winning) opponent had used just what it was with no holds barred. He is still Don Imus though, and I don't like him much as a person, or at least I don't like the person he plays on TV.

BTW, I enjoyed reading your semi-bio above...it sounds like you are an aware human being who has his head on straight. Tough times can do that to a fellow.

jimidan,

That's why I caught myself and corrected my statement to my little corner of the world. It's easy for Imus to get lost in the ever shifting local market here. My jokes were just that, anybody who's been on the air since T Rex stalked the earth would have to be classified successful. And While I don't watch Imus I will admit That my Wife, Mother and myself do have heated debates over Justice League cartoons quite often.(Yeah right...a Thanagarian hawk soldier whompin a Green Lantern! My A$$!) Calm down Mom, just calm down.

Racist:a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

Bigot: one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Prejudice: preconceived judgment or opinion (2) : an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge b : an instance of such judgment or opinion c : an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics

I hate how "Racist" has become the new blanket term for everything.

I was once assumed to be a black man; you should have seen the disappointed look on MikeyP's face when he discovered otherwise. My cool factor took a serious hit. joker

It is encouraging that we now have black Vulcans and Klingons.

Anyone recall the Star Trek episode about the two half black, half white (literally the left half of their bodies were one color, and the right the other) dudes?

I grew up mostly ignorant of prejudice. Migrating to Texas was a seriously shocking experience for me. There remains a lot of closet bigotry still alive and well down here in bubba-land. It disgusts me.

When white men start griping about reverse discrimination, I pretty much gotta leave the room. It's an absurd idea.

Honest to God empathy is a very useful tool.

"When white men start griping about reverse discrimination..."

I have some friends that feel they are in the most discriminated demographic group there is in the US; Protestant white males. Uh, yeah... Protestant white males sure have had tough row to hoe here in the South (sarcasm alert).

I'm glad I didn't have to put up with whatever happened to make them feel this way... whatever it was.

could not care less about someone they dont even know.

Exactly, I didn’t know who Imus was until this hoopla, and he doesn’t strike me as someone I’d worry about his opinion or what he might say about me.

I find the fact that Imus's comments have "scared me for life"

If that’s all it takes to scar someone, some stupid, ugly old man says something stupid and bigoted about you and suddenly you’re wrecked, sheesh.

I realize they are young, but at that age it would take a whole heap more than something like that to scar my kids !!

Confidence in one’s self, black or white, is required and with all their achievements I’m surprised to hear the one particular Rutgers player make that comment.

Not saying comments of that nature wouldn’t hurt me, but it would have to come from someone I admired, or cared about, or knew me personally etc.

As long as there are "others" to our "us", there will be racism or religious hatred....Prejudice knows no creed or color.

That’s profound, very true, and very sad indeed !!

I try my best to not carry any racism, prejudice or hatred toward anyone, although I do make fun of folks it’s usually folks I know and like !! : )

I am not trying to defend them, but after watching this same thing over a few times, it was apparent to me that Imus and Bernard were in "black face" when they performed this skit. It wasn't like they just said it cold-hearted and matter-of-factly, it was a lampoon of the way gangstas talk.

That doesn't make it less stupid, but it puts it in some context...which the way the media puts it, there is none. It just doesn't have the same intended effect when Charles Gibson repeats it with his stiff upper lip.

It appears now that they are going after anybody and everybody who uses this language in public...blacks and whites, rappers and everybody. This is going to get interesting, I can assure you. I have a feeling that when they come down on the rappers, that we are going to really hear about how important the First Amendment is.

If we cant laugh at ourselves or our friend without pissin someone off, where do you go?I think it goes back to the idiot from Seinfeld and his rant in public. Great experience. Showed the bros that there are 2 ends on the court and that you don't have to triple pump every lay up - and we won the b grade.

Its not black or white, its green, Imus will hang because his ratings are not good enough to make the bosses look the other way. Sharpton and the other race pimps will have a payday capitalizing on white guilt. The offended "ho's" will be compensated in some way.

Compare the sympathy among the media and the usual suspects for the horrific wrong perpetrated on these poor women with the recrimination generated by the relatively minor offense dealt to the Duke lacrosse team.

As long as the core issues are ignored the problems will not get fixed. So goes the world.

Simply said. If the back community wants equality, they need to start with themselves. I don't call myself an Irish/American. I don't run around calling white people "Honkey". (A-hole, yes, Honkey, No.)

Respect yourselves and the rest of the world will respect you too.
