Saintly,
What was the final chain length(links) needed?

The box says 530 x 122 I removed 8 links so a 530 x 114 should work.

How much play should I leave in the chain?

i had well over 23k on my m2l before it got totaled and never changed the belt on it once. but on the other hand the m2l my buddy got with 2600 miles on it at the time snapped at around 3k. and when it did break we rode the same roads mile for mile when it finally did go at the end of the ride. it's like whether your bike was built on a monday morning/friday evening or the middle of the week. from what i understand you don't have the initial stretching when you take off on your bike with a chain. is this true or false

Are there any sure signs a belt is due to fail?If they are to tight or too sloppy?Etc..
I have been thinking of going to a chain on my M2.I havent made up my mind yet. This thread is interesting.

I hate chains. They're messy and they're maintenance intensive.

I completely disagree. I use o-ring chains which hardly ever need lubing, there is no mess. And the total amount of time spent adjusting my chain in the past two years is less than the time wasted for just one flatbed tow truck to arrive!

Some people like screwing around with their bikes. I just like riding them.

Which is precisely why I run chain!

Mark,
you only need 3/8" - 5/8" deflection on the bottom.

I didn't get a chain from Saintly but I did trade rims with him. The dude is a straight shooter and delivers exactly what he says he will.
Don't hesitate to buy, sell or trade with him.

I've got Saintly's conversion. Not at all messy. Slings grime occasionally on the right outlet of my race pipe but oh well, wipes off easily. I notice no discernible difference in driveability. I even get a cool little chain buzz on decel, what's not to like about that? Torts is right, Fritz is a stand up guy. If he wanted to develop any other cool buell crap I'd be interested. (hint, hint.)

IMO any cosmetic problems caused by chain grime are offset by how FUGLY all those belt guards are. Even if they are made of CF, polished aluminum etc... still atrocious.

To each their own.

I once saw Saintly kill a bear with his bare hands then eat it raw!

Huh....this seems way tight compared to the recommended Ducati slack. But is it correct where the suspension on Xbs' (when compressed) loosens instead of the usual tightening of other makes???

I hear ya mike.

so basically what this thread really boils down to is that when a lil kid is bad you break out the belt and when you need to kill a bear you use a chain.

I think I get it now. and from now on when anybody asks the question, which is better belt or chain? you just say "dude, belts are for spanking lil kids and chains are for bear hunting"

yellow chain, that would be the shizzle, Hammer could hunt wolves with one.

Here is one for the belt lovers:

'06 Uly

1st belt failure: 7700 miles

2nd belt failure: 13,000 miles

3rd belt failure: 31,000 miles

I have owned MANY bikes with chains. I have NEVER had as many final drive failures as I've had with this one bike. I really love the bike, but is IMO, the acillies heel of the Ulyssess.
