hmm, might have to put a paddle tire on the back of the xb... http://www.break.com/index/ridewater.html i have run many miles on snowmobiles across open water. i've seen trucks and four wheelers do it also, but never a bike. | ||

Rice, I to was a big snowmobile fan untilI got married. I just had no time to go up North to do it right like used to. One day I'll return to the passion I miss the most. Heres me a few years ago.... did about 75 yards or so. Could of done much more if I didn't run out of water.lol  | ||

You can turn in the water when you're skimming too (not real sharply). I found out I could do it by hitting huge puddles on dirt roads at about 60mph. A lot of us figured that out in the 70's, but we never tried to skim a pond! | ||

I can't wait for the dirt bikes to come out lol! I'm dying to do some Ice racing and if I can find a decent pond or river...might have to do some water skimming...I just pray it doesn't sink with my fat *** on it :P | ||

the most i've managed was a little over a mile on my thundercat. that was fun. i could slow down while skimming and then peg the throttle to yank the skis out of the water. that thing had plenty of guts though. somewhere i have a pic or two of my running a nice long stretch on one of my zrt's. and yes, you can do a pretty sharp corner when you are forced to. i have had to a few times when running the river. i miss my sled's... | ||

Tim, The sled of choice for me is Ski-Doo. That one above was a Mach Z 1995 model. It had ball's. Little clutch work,pipes and carb work and 244 woody's ice pick's. I did radar run's and dragged in Minoqua,Eagle River it was strapped alot for Drag's. I miss them big time. | ||

Im a polaris guy. Owned 3 and they ran flawless here in Colorado up above tree line. Due to back issues I had to give it up. A snapshot I took of a friend up at Gould a few years back.  | ||

Be prepared if you do any skimming. Every year in Cadillac, MI, on Lake Mitchell, people take the canal between the lakes and end up sinking sleds. Two tickets are usually given. No boat registration and an EPA clean up. | ||

that video looks alot like lake superior did when we were running on it. what a blast!!! if i was going to run something besides my arctic cats it would probably be skidoo. i love my cats though. the zrt's were fast, but the thundercats were the big dog.(still isnt much that can pace them out of the box). it was the sled to test your sled against. i couldnt pull up to a bar when we were in wisconsin without having to run a few people. 172 horse from the factory. then add the black magic silencers. tune the carbs. play with the gearing, spike the hell out of the track and run it. it was an animal in its own right, but then add the 5 pound n2o bottle i had notched into the under side of the seat(imagine that, lol) and it would push the 200 horse mark. i bid on a few on ebay this year but never completely went after one hard. someday... | ||

There was just a story in the news a few weeks ago about two guys who were out on a lake and suddently found themselves on thin ice and headed straight for open water. Knowing that if they stopped they would fall through, they decided to gun it and skim for land. The DNR estimated that one of them skimed his sled well over a mile, possibly almost 2 miles before he got back to shore. They hadn't found the other guy yet as of the date of the story and were brining in divers to search the lake bottom. | ||

i remember hearing about that. the main problem with skimming anything is one wrong move or one little slip up anywhere in the drive train and you will be swimming. | ||

Dana, Used to have a '96 Mach Z myself. You are right a bit of clutch work does wonders-I had a Parquette (sp?) kit in mine. Then my wife talked me into getting bikes...  |
