So here it is... I have been looking at used bike on ebay mainly, trying to decide what to get. I am really in to the X1 lightnings. I don't know much about buells and I currently ride a gs500 so I really only know Jap bikes. I have heard through the grape vines that the early buells were lemons. So I want to get the facts straight and know exactly whats what. Things I should look out for or stay away from. Most of the X1's on ebay have between 5000 and 15000 miles (prices between 4000 to 5500). I have 26000 on my gs with only routine maintenance. So hopefully you all can give me a better insight on my situation. Otherwise I might just get a sv1000 or z1000. Thanks.

I'd try for an '01 or '02. I'd also get white with Nuke Blue frame and P.M. wheels. Ok, the color choice is yours, but just remember, let the bike warm up i.e. don't touch the throttle after you start it. Start it, put your gear on, THEN go and ride it. Make your oil changes, and you'll be good to go.

There is alot of 99 and 00 on ebay, what would be the main difference between these and the 01 and 02 bikes

people get on bikes all the time, start it up then wind it up to keep it running, which on our beloved Buell bikes, tends to foul plugs out. The length of putting gear on is ample time for the bike to warm up. If you give any pressure on the throttle when you start it put too much gas in and helps foul plugs. the difference on the older X1's is the kinks of the other years are worked out. Kind of the thing where when new models come out, they have more problems than ones that have been around for awhile.

Oh yeah, letting the bike warm up a bit helps also because the oil has time to get from the oil "bag" to the motor.

the big difference is the later models have the up date shifter. same stuff still breaks on the later ones as a 99. A later shifter can be bought and installed on a older mocel for not much $. My x-1 has broke the throttle body, rocker box gaskets leaked. Same as a friends o1. Would defiantely recccomend the banke shifter or the 01 shifter on a 99 makes shifting more friendly. single biggest thing I did to mine to make it user friendly

Ok you all are kind of scaring me away from buying one... I want something thats going to run, be able to go on trips and make it to work when its nice. General maintenance... oil, tires, brakes, etc stuff like that I am fine with. Would I be better off spending the extra cash for a new..er xb12s or xb9s???.....

I own a 2002 X1, which is for sale By the By, just to get a new XB. I have put 35,000 miles on the bike. The main thing w/ the X1's I have noticed, if the owner kept the maintanece schedule and didn't flog the piss out of it, it had only minor corrections, i.e. rocker gaskets (paper factory gaskets), kick stand switch (mounted poorly from factory), etc. most guys on here take real good care of their tubers... some even prefer them over the XB's, I just like the look of the 12R's over my X1. The main difference between the 99's thru the 02's i see is the EFI system seems to be a smoother system in the 02's vs the 99's. I could be wrong but I know that the 99 X1 was the first FI bike by Buell, so some problems ensued.

Buell is a great bike. do not let a few bad apples spoil the entire bushel of bikes. There are good bikes out there, even if they have over 15,000 miles.. to me if it is a pre 01 w/ less than 10,000 miles to me I feel that they didn't rid it enough to find some of the factory glitches (that are corrected on the XB models) that I mentioned earlier. I know most bikes people don't have much in the way of miles, Harleys arn't frowned apon if they have higher miles, so why would Buells... heck I know some harleys w/ close to 75,000 miles that are just one year older than mine...

so it is all personal preference.. Check out the X1files.com and do some reading... keep poking around.. you will find out the info you need

I had a '99 & it had some problems...............but it was a GREAT bike.It handled great & made you feel like you were on some kind of racing machine. The later ones had the little gremlins worked out better.I would not hesitate to get another one.The later years of the tubers were the best for reliability.

So basically for the most part these bikes are reliable. So if I could find one with all the work done... ie gaskets, kickstand switch and what have you... I should be set to go.
