Getting ready to wrap my headers with the cloth type wrap. Any prep procedures required? Do I need to soak the wrap in water first? Can I paint the wrap? Suggestions? | ||

You'll want to soak the wrap first, it keeps the dust fibers to a minimum. Wear gloves and long sleeves or you'll be itching pretty bad. You can paint it with either regular high temp paint, or the silicone spray specifically for header wrap. I started at the top of the front cylinder and worked my way down to the collector and then back up to the rear. Has worked great for a couple of years. | ||

Did you use hose clamps to hold the wrap in place ? Thanks, TA | ||

Yep, just make sure there are stainless. I just painted over them so they are black as well. | ||

Is it a MUST that the header be off the bike, or can it be done in place? | ||

one note of caution, if you use any kind of pressure washer to clean your bike, it will eat the wrap up. It is a LOT easier with the pipe off the bike. You can put the roll in a vise and work the header around it instead of working the tape around the header. It just seems to be tighter off the bike. Definately either get the precolored wrap or use the special wrap paint, regular paint will burn off. Also if you soak it first when the wrap heats up it will shrink and be tighter. haven't wrappped my buell, but done several other bikes. Make sure the clamps also have stainless screws, alot of clamps claim to be stainless, but the screws themselves aren't | ||

Finished my FXDX. It came out nice. I was wrapping a Thunderheader. You really need two people to do it correctly, I did it by myself. Second ride out I got too low and dragged the pipe and mucked up the wrap. It doesn't hold up to asphalt very well........... TA | ||

It's not a MUST to take the pipe off, but if you want to do a first rate job, it is best to take them off. I took mine off to archive what you see below.   |
