They are your favorite Rock and Roll Band that you have never heard of... Russian Ex-pats playing Surf, Scaw, Rockabilly, and a bit of punk (and the sound track to Six String Samarai) www.redelvises.com & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Elvises

Mr Grumpy,

This is not a thread highjack or a political takeover but something has hit me. An epiphany if you will. Life is way too short to contemplate only one band for the rest of my days on earth. My favorite question to any of my friends is... What's in your play stack "now"? What did you just buy? What do you like the best of what you just bought? This is the first 15 from my play stack. Jerry Lee is cuttin' up at the moment.

Ceejay.
Maybe this is the concert you are thinking of;
http://www.amazon.com/Van-Morrison-Concert/dp/B000 JPQNPC/ref=sr_1_4/103-5631922-6116661?ie=UTF8&s=dv d&qid=1175132298&sr=1-4
Van Morrison - Live at the Beacon Theater N.Y.
It's listed at a more reasonable price, if you use the search at Amazon.

I think this is the same concert.

Skynyrd, my one and only regret in music. When I was about 19 years old I sold my white label bootleg for £8 to fund a Friday night out. I've never seen another copy, and it had the classic tracks too. I still weep over that one.

I'm very surprised, and pleased, that Slade are liked by several already. I don't know how aware Americans are about Slades long slog to recognition and chart success, but it's Jimi's death that brought it about in part.

Jimi didn't make it in the US at first. Animals bass player Chas Chandler took Jimi under his wing and kick started his career in the UK. After Jimi's untimely death (and let's not forget Little Wing) Chas was looking for a new talent when a friend suggested he should visit a club in London where a band were frequenting. That band was Ambrose Slade.

Slades first album 'Beginnings' ('Balzy' in the US), recorded in 1966 when the four were in their late teens, never made the charts. It's a fabulous album. Can be had on CD these days.

Slade in Flame is one of the best British rock movies of all time. It's loosely based around Slades rise to fame. It's a beautifully shot film, shot in the blazing summer of 1976. It portrays a pretty accurate picture of the music industry and big business circa late 60's early 70's. It is without a doubt a typically British gritty drama. Of note, Slades career took a nose dive after the film early success. Claims of the music industry turning their back on Slade because of the films content were suggested years later. It's certainly true that they couldn't get radio play or TV appearances afterwards.

Speaking of the Animals, if ever you come across their 1978 recording 'Whilst We Were So Rudely Interrupted', if you're a Blues man it is not to be missed at any cost.

The Animals 'House Of The Rising Sun' is the song that Dylan said made him pick up the electric guitar. I just Googled 'Rising Sun' and the story is far more interesting than I realised.

Nice stack, Jb2!

I'm with you on variety--more is better as far as I'm concerned. I'm pretty much hooked on Sirius now, I get to hear all kinds of stuff I probably wouldn't have gone out and bought. "Outlaw Country" gets a lot of play in my truck, as does "the Vault", "Sirius Disorder", "Spectrum" and even "Spa 73".

But I've got Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Ray Wylie Hubbard, David Lindley and the Subdudes in the CD changer, just in case.

ps--"Oooooggghhh"-you got it!

RT,

Sounds like ya gotta good stack too. I have gotten myself stuck in this outlaw Texas song writer groove that I can't escape. It's surely a rebound affair after a recent Blues addiction. There sure ain't no good music on the standard radio waves anymore, I'll give you that. Lots of hours in the shop requires a wide variety of music. May have to take a serious look into Sirius.

BEATLES - and if you narrow it down to the album - i'll have the white, please!
there's so many different kinds of music in that album you never get bored.
the best thing about the fab four is - it's so easy to listen to, and even play - i am by no means a great guitar player, yet i can play at least two dozen beatle tunes. GCFD for probably 50 tunes! and the chicks dig the love songs...

JB2, is that Jerry Lee album the one with Rock'n'roll with Jimmy Paige on it?

I hear the track now & again on late night stations here when I'm driving but I haven't been able to track down a CD.

Rancid.

They've been my favorite band ever since my sister snuck me out to go to their concert when I was 13. The weeks worth of being grounded was well worth it. If it wasn't for the local paper headline "Punk Rockers and Skin-Heads destroy hall during show" and a poorly placed ticket stub, I might have gotten away with going.

Crustys got it right. Dylan was at the top 40 years ago and still makes quality music today. How many others can claim that longevity?

Mr Grumpy, Yep that's with Jimmy and an impressive list of artists and songs. Some of the tracks fairly makes you grin from ear to ear.

Court, considering that I already know you have Walter Trout and other blues artists in your collection you should have some Smokin' Joe to go with. Very good guitarist. Passionate, gravely voice. Start with Had to Cry Today. Probably my favorite. Try Tab Benoit if you like Joe. If you like Kenny Wayne Shepard then you might also like Mark Selby's More Storms Comin'

Bob Dylan and The Band...

The Band with or with out Bob Dylan, and anyone that happened to show up...

The Band's "The Last Waltz" is without a doubt the best rockumentary of the last century.

And The Last Waltz may have even been the Greatest Concert in the History of Mankind. It took place on November 25, 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom.

So much good music, so little time...

Jack

Went out to watch a guy stunt in a strip club parking lot last night, walked in for a cold refreshment and Johnny Cash was playing...so I guess I am changing my mind again, Johnny Cash because he is THE man in black and a BAMF!! And the strippers were cute.

And because he pulled off covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" and now I don't like NIN version!!

I have never thought to look in Amazon, always went down to the local record store, most of which have no clue what I'm reffering to.

Thanks!

too many choices, so little time (in reality)

Some most excellent stuff has been already mentioned.

Just to blur the lines a little. I would take the Son Volt / Wilco / Uncle Tupelo fusion of things.

or give me; ZZ Top pre-Eliminator and with last three releases tossed in.

Good blur Loki. I was introduced to Wilco with Mermaid Avenue being a Woody Guthrie fan. I now own about everything they've released along with some Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo. That journey led me to Reckless Kelly, Slobberbone and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Gotta have variety man. : )
