Had a great ride today in the Colo foothills. Wore the Shoei and it definitely is much quieter than the HJC. Actually heard the rumble of my bike instead of the wind and whistle.

Also tried some earplugs. NOT!!! May have to play with some different ones.

Thanks for all your comments. Next time I purchase a helmet I'll think of all this info to help make my decision.

Jumpin - there was another discussion about ear plugs. Here's the link if you're interested.

There are lots of different types of earplugs. Some vendors even sell sample packs, like this:

http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Aerostich-Disp osable-Earplug-Sample-Kit-p-16502.html

Try a bunch until you find one you like. Ear plugs are a lot less annoying than permanent hearing loss (or ringing)!!!!!

yeah, I can see how that might turn you off...good idea to try different types tho...I like them because they shut out all the extra unnecessary noise...not everything, I can still hear what I need to...but no wind noise at all, very little bike noise, and no ringing at the end of the ride/day!

I agree heartily with all the pro-earplug comments. I work in a studio so my hearing is important to me. I get it checked professionally once a year just to be sure riding isn't having any detrimental effect...the wind noise can really do a job on your ears later in life and it's irreversable.

After trying a lot of different throw away foam earplugs I bit the bullet and had some custom ones made. Generally these run between $40-60 bucks and here in GA there is always a booth set up at every MC show and often at some of the larger weekend rides in the N. GA mountains. Anyway, these are waaay more comfortable and convenient than the foam style...would never go back.

I looked for the quietest helmet I could find that fit comfortably. I ended up with the Shoei X-II. It's quiet because it hardly has any vents or spoiler sticking up into the airstream. That is the key.

Good luck. Just make sure before you buy that you try it on, try several sizes and walk around with it on in the store for at least fifteen minutes. You'll look like a dork...but it's worth it. : )

One more thing...you may find this website helpful when comparing helmets and gear.
