Radio Shack has diodes. What do you need them for?

Silicone Diode from Radio Shack will work. Get one of the bigger ones to play it safe. The line on the diode is on the side the arrow points at, and the direction current flows.

It's hard to blow a diode, are you sure thats the problem?

hey, that's mighty kind of you!
reep(i never met a tougher mouse) i believe i've narrowed it down to the diodes (with the help of other badwebbers in the kv), i'm not getting a neutral light in neutral and my m2 won't start, even with the sidestand up and the clutch engaged - i have an o going thread titled neutral switch in the kv. however, i am by no means a great mechanic either, it could be anything - i'm just getting tired of push starting the beast!

Dave's replacement is Andy and he has the "Andy, I need it now" thread here on BadWeb. Of course, there has been an increase of dealership sponsors here on BadWeb lately as well! We have more choices now if our local dealers can't help us.

You can probably get a meter that will check a diode for $15 or less and know for sure.

You could take apart a flashlight and test it that way as well. With the diode in series pointing in the direction of current flow, the light will light. Turn the diode 180 degrees and reconnect, no light.

Or take a 9 volt battery, and put the diode to one terminal. Touch your tongue to the other terminal and the other end of the diode. With the diode one direction, you will feel the tingle. The other direction, you will feel nothing.

Tripp....... I have a Fluke multimeter and it has an option to test diodes. Let me know if you need it. I can swing it by your store if you want.

"Not let them see it"?!?! Heck... I would double dog dare them to do it. : )

I built a little toy "shocker" for a friend that is a science teacher, and me and the boys had great fun with it before I had to hand it over. It'd give a decent jolt.

I am watching for parts to build a vandegraf generator next... The wife better be hiding the stainless steel colander.

thanks nick, jim for the kind offers i may take you up on them, just figured i'd run the tests first, i'm all hyped up on diodes cause that's where info in the kv has led me so i figured i'd pick them up in case but i might as well put the work in before i get nice folks to send me parts and lend me tools. : )

I had a permanent solution...removing all the safety circuits altogether. I thought, "what kind of a dumb @ss would try to start their bike in gear or forget the sidestand?" Well, I have a few times, but no harm done!

well, turns out my volt meter does have a diode test (i always wondered what that little arrow meant). the diodes tested fine i suppose, both of them measured .536 with the diode test. i cleaned them up real good stuck em back in and still nothing. i'm stumped. the kick stand switch is clicking up inside the bike when i press it in, the clutch switch i cleaned up nicely the other day, if the neutral switch wire was grounding out then i would always have a neutral light. when i purposely try to ground it out i can't get a light, could a bulb keep the bike from starting?

it can't be the bulb because this was an intermittent problem, sometimes the bulb lit sometimes it did'nt, when a bulb goes it goes, i've never had one work sometimes. guess i'm going to have to start following wires.
i'm tempted to eliminate the sidestand switch but that would really suck if that was'nt the problem, could that keep your neutral light from not glowing? it does'nt seem that it would, bah!

Can you re-summarize exactly what your symptoms are?

a year ago or thereabouts my 99 m2 started having intermittent starting problems. on occasion the neutral light would'nt come on and after rolling her back and forth to make sure she was in neutral, clutch in or out, kickstand up she no starty. at that point i would pop start it or wait until the light came back on (which would usually be within a half hour). during the hh11 i pulled over to relieve myself at a rest area, same thing no light (neutral) no start. i have'nt seen the neu. ind. in months now. if i want to ride i have to pop start it. i will follow the procedure for trouble shooting the starter relay tomorrow. thank you folks very much for helping me out.

bingo, no continuity between terminal 30 & 87, malfunctioning starter relay.
i had no right to blame it on the diodes!: )
thanks again friends
