I think I have a timing problem, I have a timing light, but my manual is for a carburated S1. What is the procedure for checking this on an X1? it is the same?

You might have better luck posting this question in the "Old School Buell" section.

That is where the Tuber Experts live.

The FSM for my 01-X1 has the procedure, which is a bit more involved than this space allows. In any case, front cyl on TDC on compression stroke, attach the breakout box between the ECM and the main wiring harness, and rotate the cam position sensor until multimeter voltage goes from 0.0-1.0V to 5.0V.
That being said, if rough running is the problem, a TPS reset might be a better starting point.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Akbuell.

I just rode it without the air cleaner and it is a world better. so, I guess the air cleaner was dirtier than I thought.

I have had a Wileyco slip on exhaust for a year, and I feel it doesnt run as well as it did with the stock exhaust so it it probably a bit imbalanced with the stock snorkel and the rather open exhaust.

I'm getting tired of the plastic sides after 5 years so I'm now thinking I'll try a race "Bread pan" aircleaner/intake.

Glad it was something easy to find.
Be sure to check the KV for tips on gutting the airbox. Effective, easy, and inexpensive.
Have fun, ride safe.
