I guess it isn't in the stars for me to get to actually ride to bike week! I headed up today with one of my work buddies and made it all the way to the exit at Destination Daytona. When I pulled the clutch in to stop for the traffic on the exit ramp I heard a nice "POP" then whooaahh here we go...no clutch! The cable was brand new and that wasn't the problem. Pretty much the entire clutch ramp, ball bearing and the rest of it's immediate family came apart! I haven't pulled the primary cover yet to see how much metal is in the bottom or what other damage was done. Hopefully it will just be a few parts from Seminole Buell and I'll be back on the road.

Wow, it sucks to be you today! I have felt that pain on a long planned weekend trip before. Good luck on your repairs, hope you're back at it tomorrow!

Anyone have the pictorial IPC for the clutch release? I am trying to make sure I have all the parts that I need.

Is this what you're talking about?

These scans are from my '06 Lightning parts catalog, so I don't know how much would apply to your '03 R.

~sm: AWESOME! That is what I needed.

#2, the bearing is GONE except for the inner race which appears to be welded to the adjustment screw #7. It is possible that ring #5 is gone as well. Release plate #12 may be in the bottom of the primary cover. And I need a primary gasket.

Mike: (Seminole Buell) If you are reading this.. there is my needs list. Help a brother out! I am off tomorrow, or i could run over there this evening.

And in case anyone wants to know...yep, there was oil in the primary and it was Mobil 1.

Wow! Wonder how the heck you managed that... I wonder if something in there came apart or got installed wrong somehow.

Reep" almost 30K miles and no issues so far. Primary oil changes every 3K on the dot. I have no idea!

Yikes!

That's a new one on me. I just happen to have my primary cover off... I'm definitely eyeballing that bearing before I close up.

Vegas, this is the same bike you had your wreck on right? Possible that may have somehow caused this.

Least it's an easy fix.

That bearing is turning all the time but is not under any load except when you have the clutch lever pulled in.

The thing that makes it *not* under load with the clutch lever released is that "back it off 1/4 turn" adjustment. If any of the steps in the clutch adjustment sequence are skipped, that bearing might be loaded more than intended.

I'm a compulsive neutral user because of the traditional general fragility of motorcycle clutch throwout bearings. Someone that makes a habit out of sitting through lights with the clutch lever pulled would be putting more wear and tear on that bearing.

Cat: Yep, same bike. Who knows!

Jack: I leave it in gear until I can see everyone behind me has stopped. Call me paranoid!

As soon as I hear from the guys at Seminole Buell, I'll start getting it together. At the least, it will be pulling the primary cover and cleaning out the spare parts then going back together.

"..I leave it in gear until I can see everyone behind me has stopped..."

Darn! Good idea! I'll call you smart, not paranoid. Now I got something else to think about when I'm riding.

My first bike, a Triumph 650, would fry the clutch rod pretty quick so I learned to use neutral quickly. Then, almost every bike I've had shifted into neutral more easily moving than stopped.

All of those combined to have me habitually in neutral before I stopped. But getting rear ended once might have cured me of that.

I think the key to getting the clutch adjusted right and unloading the bearing is to make sure you back the clutch lever freeplay adjuster way off (make the lever floppy) so that you get the adjuster ramp unloaded and all the way back before you do the 1/4 turn back off adjustment.

Good luck with it!
