I have had some computer issues lately so I bought an external hard drive and moved all my files over to it that i wish to keep.

End up re-formating the computer and go to get files from external hd and nothing is there, it was lost when we disconnected the drive without shutting it off. (I called the tech line on the driver and they say this happens when not disconnecting properly).

She advises I should download "getdataback.com" software,
it is 80.00 and before I shell out the cash I was hopping somebody may know something or have had something like this happen to them like this and if it is a good product.
we have all our family photo's on the hd that we do not want to loose, so the $$$ is not a big deal to get this information back.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, run windows xp,
the external drive is a "Western digital My Book Essential dition" 250 gig.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help

I just went through a similar situation. But there is mechanical problems with the drive I was trying to recover. And ironically, it was also a Western Digital. Which, btw is the 4th one I've seen in the past year that died. Never again will I use WD drives. Seagate only from now on.

But, anyhow. I tried several pieces of software to recover it. Many of them just bombed while trying to recover the drive.

So I took a chance, and tried this:

Worked like a charm! Took over 48 hours to recover all the files.

http://www.recover4all.com/

Dunno if applicable to your scenario, but this is a very good tool. Is able to find and undelete erase files AND even previous versions of files (provided they have not yet been overwritten).

I needed this and tried out several prgs. This is the one that actually and reliable found my files. Not cheap, but it does work.

Had similar hard drive problem a few years ago, all data inaccessible, and bought this:
http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm

Worked great! Note - my drive didn't have a mechanical/electrical problem, just something corrupt in the FAT system. GetBackData is easy to use, didn't need any support to recover my files.
