I need to vent. Last weekend, I brought my XB9SX into the dealership for an oil change and clutch adjustment. I rode the bike home and had to park it all week, as I had to attend an out of town class during the week. I woke up this morning quite excited to take her out for her first ride since being worked on and ended up leaving early to take the long way in through the hills. About a mile later - pwing! - the clutch cable snapped as I was upshifting from a stop at an intersection.

I was able to ride back home and drove the truck into work, but I'm so mad that the cable snapped, after having had it inspected and adjusted by the dealership. They're closed today, so I won't be able to figure out the next step until tomorrow - so, I'm relegated to stewing about the whole thing.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

-Heath

How many miles do you get out of a clutch cable. I break one on my X1 every 16000 miles

Which end did it break at? To adjust the clutch, you only really fuss with the primary and half way up the engine. Could be an easy thing to miss.

Thanks for posting that... I should replace my cable while it is warm. About 15k on the bike, though I keep the cable well lubed. Have a new cable hanging on the wall beside the bike "just in case"...

It broke off at the lever. It was actually feeling a bit loose the day I brought it in, and I specifically asked them to check it for adjustment and wear. I think that Kdan has it right, I need to start learning to work on the bike on my own. I am a bit limited in what I can do in my driveway - home owners association and all that, but I think that anything outside of fluid changes should be Ok.

Yes, but I also have a wife. =)

I can probably go down the street to my dad's place though and do my oil changes if it comes down to it.

As important as proper adjustment, lubing the barrel inside the lever with WD40 or better yet HHS2000, it lets it pivot freely which helps prevent the actual cable strands from snapping.

The cost of the hydraulic kit for American Sport Bike is not too bad. Plus you get the advantage of hydraulic setups, like never having to lube the cable.

I always make the cable really loose when adjusting the clutch/cable and take out the lever end to inspect it...then clean out all the old lube/grime and put new grease in the "pockets" and the tip. I also run a 2-3 second shot of cable lube down the housing and let gravity do its thing.

Got over 32,000 miles on the original clutch cable and it looks pretty good still.

When a first got the bike, I sanded all the sharp edges of where the cable runs through on both the stock and CRG levers to help make sure nothing snags on the cable. I have found a few levers with some serious burrs that could have really messed up the cable pretty quick.

"..I always make the cable really loose when adjusting the clutch/cable..."

And that, at least on my M2, was one of the secrets to getting it adjusted right. If you did not do it that way the throw was not right on the clutch actuating arm and adjusting screw and, as a consequence of that, you could not get the lever freeplay right at clutch lever.

The KV is full of detailed descriptions of the procedures for adjusting clutches and cables and the symptoms and consequences of not doing it right (erratic shifting, lurching from a stop, clashing of gears from a stop, etc.).

It is easy enough to do but some of it is a little subtle and subjective by look and feel. It is not something I would trust even a factory trained service technician to do to my satisfaction every time so I prefer to do it myself. And it feels soooo good when you do it yourself and get it right!

Jack

Had the same thing happen to me this past fall. Only 2200 miles on my xb12, broke off right at the lever. Don't think that would be a maintenance issue with that low of mileage.

Mine snapped at about 120mph in 5th gear.
Ya that sucked.
Worse yet is the closest dealer was 115 miles 1way into canada.
It did give me a chance to cruise at a comfortable 140mph for miles on end on my buddys R1 though so I guess it wasnt all bad.

There is a happy ending to this story. Biggs really went the extra mile on this one.

They rolled out to my house and picked the City X up, brought it to the dealership, replaced the cable, and then detailed the bike for me.

I took it out this weekend, for my first ride in like two weeks! This was one of the best rides to date.

Well I think he is !!

I would laugh if you hit him, you would then deserve to be broke in half, and yes he could break you in half, but I got your back so he better not when I'm around !!
