Just got back from the Thunderbike races at Greenwood Iowa, and noticed lots of the bikes, other than the XB9R's,had the new rocker boxes on them.I was told that this will do away with having a catch can run from the breather bolts in the head. They had the new style rocker boxes and a solid bolt in the head holding the carb. mounting bracket on.This seems like the way to go,eliminating my catch can.Anybody know anything on this set up?

Richie,
You will still need a catch can, it's just that your breathers will be located on top of your rocker boxes instead of coming out of the bolts on your heads. While this mod will not eliminate the need for a catch can, it should reduce the amount of blowby you get.

I didnt notice the breathers coming out of the top of the rocker boxes.I also dont remember seeing anything coming down,on the Buells with the XB9R rocker boxes on them,to a catch can.Am I mistaken in thinking the XB9r's dont need or have catch cans, and by putting on their rocker boxes, will I still need one?I am trying to stop the blow by i am getting from the breather bolts in the side of the head I now have, seems if we ride for extended periods of time going 80 or more.

Richie,
While I can't say for sure what the set up was on the bikes at Greenwood, I do know two things for sure.

1) Your crank case needs to breathe.

2) The XB rocker boxes come with breather outlets on the top of them.

If you were to plug up your breather bolts and not provide a way for your crank case to breathe it would cause several problems. First of which would probably be blown base gaskets.

The XB set up with the breathers on top of the rocker boxes is believed to be superior to the head bolt location. Like I posted earlier you should see less blow by, maybe a lot less. Thats probably why you saw them at the track.

Also, it's very easy to plumb the hoses from them and make them discrete. But regardless your crank case NEEDS to breathe, and the blow by needs to go somewhere, hence the need to retain a catchcan.

Does that help?

This may help,
Here is a picture of the way I re-routed the breathers out of my airbox and into a catchcan on my XB. You can see the breather outlet on the top of the rear rocker box.

Breather plumbing

Also, go to the "Knowledge Vault" and look under "Engine-Breathers" for more info.

Richie,

I run the XB covers on both my X1 and S1 and they work great. By the way, its just the valve covers themselves, the rocker box is identical to the XL motor. When you go to the XB valve cover, you eliminate the spacer of the XL motor and functionally convert the XL breathing system to that of an XB. You eliminate a gasket sealing surface (and potential leak path), move the breather position to the highest part of the engine, use the latest and greatest breather valve, plus its very easy to route breather lines for custom applications. Just throw solid bolts in for the carb/throttle body mount....no problems. I don't have carry over issues with either motor. I still run a catch can though.

The XB covers also fixed the clearence problem I had with stock covers, the rocker arms were slapping till I installed the XB's they are alittle taller inside.

I did the conversion, wrote and took pictures about the process HERE

It greatly improves the engines breathing and greatly reduces the amount of puking.

Those XB covers look pretty cool! Whenever I've had the rocker box covers off there is never much oil on the top part of the cover, practically none. It seems to make a lot more sense to have the breather outlet there.
