I know that they have 2-cycle specific oils on the market, however if you are unable to get to any and you need to fuel a 2-cycle motor what do you use? I want to know if there is a motor oil when mixed properly will work when your in need.

The latest ice storm here had me thinking about this because I heat with wood and I had no gas for my chainsaw. I know that it runs on a 40:1 mix ratio which is 3.2 oz. to 1 gallon. My worry started when I had to much time to think about it, I had enough wood on the porch for a week so there was no desperate need.

It just hit me that I didn't know. Then I went to the web and got everyones ad about the oil they sold but no real information beyond mix ratio calculators.

So does anyone know?

This has got to be a better topic than the shaved Brittany one even if it's not exactly motorcycle related.

It just hit me that this is a Knowledge Vault kind if question, however it is not Buell specific. Therefore I believe that it is OK here. If I am incorrect I hope that Blake will forgive me, and move it to where it needs to be.

As far as I know, you pretty much have to use the 2 stroke oil...I've used bean oil back in the old days, but it's inferior. Castor Bean oil...It's not clean and doesn't mix with gas well. Get a big jug-o-oil for those days you can't get out and make sure you have enough on hand. This cat has some stuff to say about it. http://www.sea-doo.net/techarticles/oil/oil.htm

My dad ran a two cycle Craftsman lawn mower for 35 years and never put any thing in it but regular gas and straight 30W Quaker State engine oil. If I remember correctly his mix was 50:1.

I have done that with a different brand of straight 30W in my chain saw when I have run out with no ill affects. I also have run out of chain oil and used 80W gear oil.I just go back to the right stuff as soon as I can.

Thanks guys.

I thought I remembered my father saying that you could use non-detergent SAE 30W just mix it a little lighter than normal. Since he is gone I very well couldn't ask him to remind me. Besides at 16 you aren't listening the way you should be anyway.

I don't plan on being without in the future. It was just one of those nagging thoughts that tend to role around in the back of my mind until my feeble grip on reality is challenged.
