Okay, my guess is that, like myself, there are quite few of us out there with DirecTV.

I had the old R10 reciever and recently had a glitch with it, and got the R15 (new) from DirecTV.

OKAY... Here we go. I have had TiVO for about 2 yrs. with DirecTV and have always been a little bent out of shape that you could "record to VCR" but not to say... your computer.

There is a USB port (2 of them) on the receiver. When you look in the manual, it says "for future use." I've had a DVR for 2 yrs. and two different ones.. They have always said "for future use." What the hell can I do with that USB port? I would love to put some of my stuff on DVD. I mean, I've got the burner on computer. DO I have to get a DVD burner? Or what?

Any tips or tricks about the DirecTV DVR+ that i dont know about . Also, why the hell is the stuff in the "showcase" tab on my playlist permenant. Today it recorded 8 episodes of some B.S. "Project MyWorld" whatever the hell that is.

Any Help would be great.

Thanks All

Mark

Mark,
Your screwed with the DirectTV Tivo. The regular Tivo allows you to connect a network card to the USB port and send the files to a computer which you then edit with one of the Sonic products (MyDVD if I recall).

Best bet get a DVD recorder (they can be had for 75 - 100.00) and then record to vcr becomes record to DVD and you can rip that to mpeg2 with some freeware.

I have a much older DVR, but I believe the showcase stuff is promos that companies buy on Direct (like Chrysler or others). I delete them, or they delete themselves shortly.

HIH

Matt

Oh man, do I despise DirecTV! Consider yourself lucky to have DirecTV with TIVO at all. They have severed their relationship and no longer are shipping out receivers with TIVO. Instead, you get their "DirecTV with DVR" which is a total pile of junk. If you have HD service, you might be as unlucky as me and end up with the DirecTV DVR+ which has to be the worst piece of home entertainment equipment that I have ever encountered. The thing has not functioned properly since the day it was installed. What's worse is that they refuse to do anything about it, but are keen to point out that by activating the receiver upon installation that I am now locked into a 2-year contract! Of course, they never said a thing about that when I called to order it or when I specifically requested to purchase the equipment outright to avoid a contract. They're downright criminal in their business practices. As soon as I can afford to eat the cost of cancellation, I'm going back to cable and buying a TIVO unit separately.

Oh, and just in case you think you'll get around DirecTV by switching to their "competition" Dish Network, keep in mind that both are now owned by Hughes. So, you can expect the same quality of service from them as well.

Sorry I didn't have anything to contribute to your question, but I can't pass up an opportunity to bash DirecTV!

I need to get to work on the how to's on recording stuff off of my DirecTV HD receiver.

Can I connect a DVR to one of the (not otherwise used) video outputs on the back of the receiver and record what I see? I'd like to do that occasionally.

If that is a doable thing, what is a good brand/model of DVR? I don't mind paying to get good quality, I will keep it and use it for years.

Today is my last day with DireTV. They've been screwing me for too long. But I never had a good option before now. They finally installed digital cable in my subdivision. For less than I'd paying for DirecTV, dial-up internet and local only phone, I get the whole package with HD, high speed and phone.

Yeah, kick those DirecTV a-holes to the curb! I can't wait to do the same.

Nuts - if you do a search you'll find several sites that'll tell you how to hack your Tivo allowing you access to all the standard Tivo v. 2 features. It apparently requires some computer savvy as you AFAIR have to remove the harddrive and plug it into a PC to run and install the hacks.

I'm not PC savvy and have left things alone, but like you it bugs me that the features are there but *just* out of reach.

But DirectTV says they're cheaper than cable

I had DirectTV for 2 years. 4 times they attempted to double bill me for service. I dumped 'em after the 4th time. Went to Dish Network. While they weren't perfect, they were better than DTV. I then switched to Time Warner cable so I could get HD locals and an HD DVR.

I'll *NEVER* go back to Direct TV.
