Posted on 01-29-2007 12:55 PM by Blake

Dear fellow Buell enthusiasts,

I've just learned the saddest of news from Hans' son, Sander, that our dear friend and adviser, Hans Idzerda, has passed from this Earth late yesterday evening. Hans had been gallantly battling lung cancer for some time and had persevered much longer than the doctors had originally expected. Hans was a strong man with a strong will and an eager enthusiasm for life and a love for his fellow man. He will be sorely missed.

Hans was one of the rarest of kind, thoughtful and honorable men I've had the privilege to know. His passing will be felt deeply and painfully for a long time by all those who were blessed to know him, especially his family. Yet his spirit will live on with all those who were fortunate enough to know him, so that we may continue to call upon him for his wonderfully kind and thoughtful counsel.

If you'd like to post your condolences and warm memorial comments here, please do so. Sanders, Hans' son, will be informed of this thread and maybe learning of how beloved his father was among our community will be some comfort to him and his family in this very painfully sorrowful time.

Hans dear friend, I miss you already, but I will never forget you. Thank you for your honor, kindness and enthusiastic attentiveness to the very end of your time on Earth to this little online community of Buell enthusiasts. You've been the truest of blessings in my life and will continue to be so in spirit for as long as I walk this Earth.

My warmest thoughts and prayers this day and for some time to come are for Hans and his family.

In honor of Hans, I humbly ask that all of us on BadWeB might please adopt a kinder, more thoughtful, non-confrontational demeanor. Please?

With warmest and sincerest condolences to the Idzerda family and friends,

Blake

I just got a mail from Pete in Holland. Hans' funeral is on Saturday.

Pete has taken initiative to present Hans' family with a memento, so if you want your name on it, you can sign on here:

It was brought to my attention that if you are not registered at SacBorg you cannot leave a post. So I have taken the liberty to copy (with the authors permission) the SacBorg post here. Please sign below if you would like your name transcribed to the flag as described in Pete's post.

Thank You.

======================================

The mail just came with the details for Han's funeral.
It's on Saturday, and I have to work. However, I will be able to visit his family Friday night.

I had planned on giving Grizzly a Buell flag that I *ahem* aquired a few years ago, with the intent of getting people's signatures on it when the Team Elves to New York thing happened at Christmas time, but I managed to screw up the time to meet and give him the flag, and he had to leave without it.

We have two days now though.

Flag

If anyone would like their name on the banner(maybe with your state/country as well?), I'll write it on there and present it to his wife and family on Friday.

He was a good bloke, and it would be nice for his wife and children to know how far around the world people were able to see it.

Thanks.

Pete

First i will introduce myself, my name is Sander and Hans is my father.

We (my mother and brother and i) would like to thank you all for your support and kind words. Especially pete, who visited us before the funeral and gave the flag with many of your names on it. Such things really help! I can tell you that now from my own experience. I wish Hans could have read all the nice things you have written about him. Reading all that makes me even more proud of him. Really he was the best, also in real life and for us as a father and husband.

The funeral went the way we wanted. luckily we had a photographer so now it is possible to see how things really happened. During the funeral almost everything flew by.

I would like you to know that badweb (you guys!) meant a lot to Hans, he often spoke about the forum and about several of you. He even enjoyed reading (maybe especially, but you didn't hear that from me) the famous discussions here going on.

About his bike, it's mine now, at least officialy. Hans his M2 will always stay his bike. I think the following should be the deal. I'm taking care of it and can ride on it in return. Weird feeling when feeling a grin while riding and a split second later realising that that grin was meant for Hans.
to be able to take proper care of the bike nowadays you need a forum, so i will also read the topics about all the things you buellers have discovered and found out necessary to be able to take care of your buells. (Hans mentioned once some of the scarce (!) technical issues like the broken exhausts, the camchaintensioner, several oil issues) Oh man! Help ! What is this? i come from the world of hondas! but.. i will learn... in time..

Thanks again for all of your support and please keep up the good work here. Hans made some real friends here and i know if this forum meant a lot to my father it must mean a lot to some of you guys also.

Thanks for being a joyfull part of my fathers life

Sander;
Thank you for checking in and we all breathe easier knowing that Hans has a good rider at the helm as he rides shotgun with you on his M2. As far as taking care of it, stick close to Pete. He's a Topgun on caring for these silly machines.

Ride well, ride often.

Sander:

A huge welcome to you from friends around the world. Hans, a gentleman in every sense of the world, made valued contributions and friends around the world.

We're pleased to have you with us and our hearts are with you and your Mother. We miss your Dad.

You'll love the bike and I sure Pete will be able to provide much advise if you need it. In addition, you'll find you can quickly get answers here.

With warmest regards,

Great to hear from you Sander!

As I recall, Han's had a nicely sorted M2. I had a 2000, and when I sold it with 27k miles on it, it was by all measures a better and more reliable bike then it was when I bought it with 3500 miles on it. I still miss that bike, and that was without any special emotional attachment of another special person.

I would *love* to think that I would be remembered after I move on by my personal motorcycle being enjoyed by other members of my family through the generations. The thought makes me smile.

I will defer to Pete, as he knows more about the bike and is closer to it, but for an M2, if you do the front exhaust mount update, update the primary chain tensioner, run the belt scary loose, swap the low speed carb jet, replace the rocker box gaskets with metal gaskets, replace the primary gasket with a metal one, and check your oil pump drive gear at around 15k miles to see if you will need to replace it or not, then an M2 ends up being a fairly reliable bike. From what I know of that bike, I expect Hans probably took care of most of this for you already.

If you want to take a while and tour the US, we have a garage, tools, and a guest room in the basement near Cincinnati Ohio you are welcome to stay (if you don't mind a house full of kids!).

Sander, just a couple of days ago I bumped into this thread in the recent archives and thought to myself this thread shouldn't really be in the archives, where in time it will be dated rather than titled in those archives. I couldn't think of any appropriate reason the other evening to bring this thread to the top again. It's one of those times when such things need to come from the heart rather than just reason, and the other night my heart wasn't in it.

So how nice that you yourself have done the inevitable, and for that I'd like to share a thought with you.

Today would have been my dad Jack's 70th birthday. Sadly we lost him to cancer June 1st 2003. Time is a great healer as they say, but just like the world is a lesser place without my dad, so it is without yours too. Hans was the most level headed of any BadWeBer past and present. That and his gentleman manner and diplomacy will always be missed around here. Thank you for your dads insights into the BadWeB. I'm sure his presence here often raised a chuckle or two in your home.

Welcome aboard

Rocket

Sander,

It is very good to hear from you again. Learning about your intention to eagerly adopt your father's motorcycle and carry on enjoying it with him in mind is truly heartwarming (non-medical term joker ), and so very gratifying for all of us who grew to appreciate Hans. I very much look forward to learning about your experiences in that endeavor. I am a longtime Cyclone rider myself, so if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

On another subject, one close to my dear wife's heart, literally, I have a positive update to share offline. Thank you again, we remain very grateful for your kind expert counsel. It is difficult to imagine a more noble career than one yours, especially knowing your kind and thoughtful demeanor.

For sure, the apple does not fall far from the tree. : )
