The Sprint ST is indeed a great bike,I enjoy mine as much as my S-2. The newest has major heat issues with exhaust under the passenger and problems with the hardbag covers(sound familiar?).The 1999-2004's can be had for very good deals.

FMJ,

There's an '06 demo for a steal of a price available. I wonder if there are any fixes for the heat and baggage issues?

I guess the real question is, Are you looking for a Sport Tourer or a Touring Sport?
I just plagiarised that from some one here I think.

Before buying the Uly I looked at the last generation Tiger, Sprint and present ST1300.

The Tiger and Uly are two peas in a pod, but the Uly has a little more room and handles better than last year's Tiger. The Tiger was a real possibility for me and if I would have been more comfortable with the height, I probably would have bought one. The Uly to me was the better of the two bike so it won out. Looking at pictures of the Tiger for 2007, the back seat looks smaller that the 2006, and much smaller than the Uly. As a matter of fact I think the new Tiger is smaller than the old one. That said, it is shooting for the Multistrada and Ulysses more than the GS and KTM. The bike has the bigger 1050 triple with a twelve HP advantage over the Uly. I haven't seen the rest of the specs yet, but it has sport bike wheels and it looks like it can handle. It is imitating the Daytona 675 in many ways and that bike is just a fantastic handler. Only drawback to me is it looks like the V-strom now and that is just as ugly as it gets. Also the Uly has more passenger capacity.

The Sprint was a real favorite for me on paper, then I sat on one. The bike is a definite Touring Sport Bike. The ergos are only slightly better than a Firebolt. The Lightnings and my M2 are much more comfortable and its not even in the same ballpark as the Uly in comfort and two up capacity. If the X1 is not working for you, I doubt the Sprint is what you are looking for. A great machine if you want more Sport than Tour.

The ST1300 was really what I was settling on before the Uly came out. I really liked the bike and the way it sat. It is a true Sport Tourer. Plenty of room for rider and pillion, a great motor with plenty of power and options galore. Its only drawback was its price. At several thousand more than the Uly, I just could not justify the price difference for one, and the Uly made the ST1300 feel like an SUV in comparison. In a straight line the ST1300 can walk the Uly but on the first curve the Uly walks the ST1300 right back. I am into curves and not straight line speed, so the Uly won out.

In the sport touring world you have plenty of powerful bikes but few real handlers. The Multistrada from what I have read is the top bike in handling in this class, with the Uly a close second. The new Tiger may change that line up, road tests will have to tell. I have ridden with FJRs and in the straightaways the FJRs have the commanding advantage, but in the twists the Uly can play with a FJR. I literally cruised up Black mountain with an FJR dragging parts trying to keep up with me. I could have left him at any time, but I was just enjoying the ride and was letting him stay close enough to catch up on the short straights. I imagine most Sport Tourers will be the same way.

At a different price scale, the new R1200RT is just top notch. Close enough to a Uly in every way with more options and better seat height, the R1200RT is a fantastic bike, but at $6K more than the Uly it takes deep pockets that I really wish I had.

Quick shot of the Uly on the Dragon. I am cruising this curve at about 70mph.

And one with my daughter going out on a two day camping trip. The bike has all our gear, plus a two-man tent in the bags. You can see one sleeping bag used for a backrest cushion. The other sleeping bags was in one of the bags. My daughter, though eleven, is 5' tall and 100#.

I forgot about this picture. This was taken later on the same trip as above. You can see my daughter leaning on the inside of me. She likes to lean so I just stay straight and let her lean the bike. She loves it.

My personal preference for a two-up scenario would be a Uly or an R1200GS or an R1200R. The Uly gets the nod for passenger comfort according to all accounts, but it is more sport than tourer. I'd not be much interested in touring two-up for stints much longer than 120 miles. On anything but the slab, that's going to amount to well over two hours in the saddle.

I have heard nothing but rave reviews of the Triumph Sprint, at least prior to the newest incarnation of the bike.

I'd not be much interested in touring two-up for stints much longer than 120 miles.

Is that because of your comfort or your passengers?

I find the thing that limits my two-up distance is that she gets bored. She likes to take rides, but an hour is enough. The bike is comfortable enough for more.

Blake, I'm also curious about what led you to that conclusion. Pillion comfort is what led me to choosing the Uly over a host of other bikes, including the ST1300 (a very close second), FJR, VStrom (she hated, I didn't like it so much), Triumph Sprint (more sport than touring, NOT a two-up bike), and the Connie (horrid for both rider and passenger, IMO). My wife has a bad hip and knees, yet we regularly do 250-300 mile days on the Uly with no issues.

I still want Buell to build a *REAL* replacement for the S3T. Buell CEO, John Flickinger<sp?> was in Hals the other day. I was ribbing him about doing an SS with a Uly tail, and a firebolt fairing. AKA XB12SSRX : )

He laughed, and commented "where did I hear THAT one before" : )

He did say "we're working on things you may like in the future". So there is hope yet!

The Triumph ST and Ducati ST3 are more sport than tourer. Both were nice to me, especially the Triumph with that cool triple sound. The Uly is great, it is comfortable, handles well but is lacking gas range and wind protection in my opinion.Although it does like dirt roads,etc... I"m looking at getting a '07 ST1300 myself (keeping the FireBolt)... The 1300 is a nice bike, more touring than sport. It has a lot of aftermarket support and is comfortable to me... It also holds almost 8 gallons of gas. I haven't looked at the Yamaha much as it seems to be more sport. The Honda is what I"m looking at because it is more touring than sport and if I want to play, I"ve got the FireBolt...
Also, if you're worried about the price of the Honda, there are a few dealers that you can get them for about $2500 off list...

I have decided on a used BMW R1100RT or similar. They seem to be available for reasonable cost.

I say "or similar" because BMW has other models that are slightly different but appear focused at touring as well.

Any more thoughts about the Beemers are appreciated.

Jim, Roadrailer (HB) (Name?),

It's not a comfort issue. It's more a social and mental issue.

HB, by "stint" I mean in between stops. In my experience, I can stay focused and much more alert if I stop every couple hours for a quick break, a drink of water and sometimes a little snack. An uncomfortable bike is going to continue to be uncomfortable no matter how many stops one makes, so that is not an issue for me. My bike is not very comfortable (rearsets, clipons, horrible small seat with inadequate padding), but a little discomfort has never bothered me much.

With a passenger there are often interesting overlooks and points of interest and the social aspect is as enjoyable to me as the riding probably more so, so stopping every hour or two is a very positive thing for me.

If I have to make time on the road, I can do that too, but I don't often choose that kind of riding scenario if I can help it.

I bought an '05 ST1300 because my wife hated the S3. It turns out that she doesn't really like the ST either. She's gotten too spoiled by nice cars. At 740 lbs. you want to be careful where you point it. But it is amazingly smooth.
The FJR is lighter and more sport oriented than the ST. A friend that had one said that his wife hated the seating position since the rear is higher than the front.
I really liked the Sprint, but not as a long distance bike. I had a CBR1100, fun bike to ride but again not a long distance bike (my knees hurt).
We took a short test ride on the Uly, (which she liked). I wanted more wind protection and more fuel capacity. I routinely go over 300 miles between fills. 7.6 gal @ 50mpg.

There was that split second where I didn't realize you were talking about the bike.

The 06 Sprints got new bags (with replacement for those that got the old ones) and a upgrade to address the heat issue (mostly for the rider, little done for pillion)

both changes are stock on 07s -- very nice bike, if the ergos suit ya

I am looking at doing the exact opposite. I have my sport tourer, now I want a sport bike next. I like the Triumph Daytona 675. On paper this bike is awesome. Never sat on one but if I do and I like it, it may be the next stable mate for the Uly and M2.

The 675 has to be the smallest bike I have ever seen. Compared to a ZX6R, CBR600RR, or GSX-R 600 (I haven't seen the new R6) It looks like a minibike. Compared to the Triumph Sprint ST, it looks like a toy. I'm only 5'10", but I felt like a giant sitting on that bike.
