Starting tomorrow I start my first office job.

I will be working at the University of Michigan's Dearborn campus (where I plan to go after graduating ITT) working in the building managment dept.

I will FINALLY be doing CAD work and I will also be setting up building schedules, working with contractors and other building stuff LOL.

Not what I plan on doing after I graduate but it will be a nice change of pace and possibly sway my decision away from being a mechanical engineer.

Either way this should be a good experience all around...}

It's good to see those who "don't need no dang job" go to work. Good for you...better change your profile.

Also, remember CAD always works better if you curse at it!

It's always a bright, sunny day in CAD. Sounds crazy, but a CAD program can be an extension of your imagination... kind of like a musical intstrument.

What program will you be working with?

Cool.

It should be good experience for you if you do decide to pursue mechanical engineering. A big part of ME's are employed by building contractors and architects for HVAC. Probably not what you had in mind when you said mechanical engineer (let me guess, you want to design motorcycles?), but I didn't think I'd be working as a coal mining consultant the last 14 years after getting my BSME, either.

I love AutoCAD. User since 1993.

Good luck with the new job,

Bill

Congrats! Watch and learn how other people run projects and solve problems. You are going to be deep into the hardest part of engineering, which, unfortunately, has little to do with engineering.

The easy hard part is figuring out the right solution. Then comes the hard hard part. : )

Ditto about enjoying your time with CAD, in college I got a job working for a contractor doing building design, mostly mech. engr stuff, didn't have to write a single paper. After straining my eyes at a computer monitor for that long, 3 yrs, I fell into a job that is more about my passion, automobiles.

The automobiles are no motorcycles, and no passenger cars, but they are still very interesting to see being build and tested. The only downside is all the reading and writing of reports. Though I think that dictates ones paycheck.

Good grief... I started with Intergraph 2D software loaded on a VAX785 mainframe hooked up to a 68k dual screen monitor and digitizing table back in the mid-80's... practically the stone age. Back then, monitors could only display that creepy greenish color... then we got orange. I really felt like I was living in the future, back then.

One day, my mind won't be agile enough to learn the new releases... but not now. I think some people just adapt to CAD better than others.

I use SolidWorks on my current project.

Good for you Spidey, I hope you really enjoy the new job.!!

As for a drafting preference, I use AutoCAD and Pro-E and like Pro-E 10 fold over AutoCAD. I few others in the office refer to it as a glorified Ech-a-sckech

Naahh...just find a PE to stamp the plans for you. :-) I don't have enough imagination to design...I'd always be the one sizing pins and bearings.

I had the full functioning but time-limited Inventor trial and went through all the tutorials and examples. I liked it a lot. For compatibility with clients, though, I'll be using AutoCAD with a civil- and mining-specific add-on (SurvCADD) for the foreseeable future.

Congrats and good luck on your new job, Spidey...you too, Will.

Best of Luck, I graduated from there in 1981, BSME, picture should still be on the wall. We used to hang out at the powerhouse next to the Henry Ford mansion and drink beer, before it was reopened. Friend of brothers, big Bob St. C., worked in facilities there too (may still be working there). Hope game tickets are part of your package.

Go Blue,

Pete
