I currently own a Nikon N60 when I purchased it it came "packaged" from the camera shop with a promaster lens. Never manged to take any really great pictures with the camera frequently point and shoots would take better pics in the same settings. I got disgusted after talking with camera buffs who all said that the lens is dragging me down. Now digital age is into full swing and I'm looking at the D50 to upgrade from a point and shoot digital.

My main reason for the D50 is the hopes that I can get a lens that I can swap between my 35mm body and the digital one.

However as I type this the little voice in my head is telling me to just sell off the N60 and pour the funds into a digital and say good bye to 35mm.

So my big question is...

Can I get lenses to swap between those two cameras?

Is there brands other than Nikkor that are good quality lenses?

A good online source for camera stuff?

Thanks

Yes you can swap lens. However, the focal range will change when using your lens on the digital camera. Sigma, and Tokina are brands of lens that I use on my F5. Photographyreview.com should be a good spot to learn about gear. As far as selling the N60. Right now, it will probably be worth more to you to keep it.

As a long time Nikon user (both film & digital), my advice would also be to Ebay the N60 & JunkMaster lens and go digital. But most current lenses will work on the N60.

Well just checked ebay. Its not even worth listing the N60. I'll buy a case of B&W film and set it up just for that.

Keep the N60. I'm still aching over selling my "worthless" Gibson Melody Maker for $100.

Base you choice of lens, both Tokina and Sigma keep getting darn good reviews, on "for the digital, but will work on the film".

I shoot primarily digital (Nikon D100 and 990) but generally carry a film body with me for precisely the same reason....I have them and they are worth nothing to sell.

What I have discovered is that the film yields some great material.

There are many great photo sites but there is also a wealth of knowledge here.

Gentleman Jon is a professional, Jim Corso is a professional, Ebear, although he'll deny it, is a pro and Dave Gess was being paid to take pictures during the days when hieroglyphics were slowly yielding to film. These guys are good. Wendy Mellinger, a Buell rider, is a top notch fulltime pro as well and drops in here from time to time.

Tossed in the mix, we have a handful of pleasantly developed amateurs including Ferris who has an unequalled eye for "seeing" a picture.

Then there are the bottom feeders like Reep, Blake, Henrik and I who eschew beauty and wait for those special moments when someone's fly is down or they've just spilled beer on themselves. Flowers, bees and streams be damned.....I like the funny stuff!

tamron sells good lenses as well

just bought a mb100 and double charger on ebay for my d100 from cameta http://stores.ebay.com/Cameta-Camera good prices ( that is compered to here )
was a good deal and first impression off cameta is very good ( stil have to recieve the goods )

please take in mind that a "old" lens on a digital body has a bigger number than stated on the lens ( times 1.5 i believe )

upgrading to a quality lens is a good idea...it will definitely help the quality of your images...

keep in mind also....and I say this with no knowledge of your skill level...that the photographer makes a good photograph. Putting the time into really understanding things like what makes a "fast" lens fast, the way light is travelling into your lens, how your inputs (changes in aperture, shutter speed) affect the final image etc...will help you much more than newer fancier equipment.

I've produced some real clunker images with my F5 (ok, and a few nice ones in there ; ) ) but I've also produced some great images with my old N6006

Seeing pictures is way more important than any gear. I often take shots with a small Olympus clamshell film camera, no zoom, just a 28mm lens and folks look at them and ask what kind of camera I used thinking that the camera makes the pictures, the phtog makes the picture.

Look at stuff, take pictures of details, practice

Tough to do better that this if you like short, sweet and to the point.

I have all Nikon glass.

I'll probably get the D80 but will keep the N70 (I have 2) because they fit the underwater housing I use for underwater photography.

Tamron and Sigma for generics.

Portraits and macro - 60mm f3
20mm wide angle
get a decent zoom - I have a Sigma that runs 100-500mm and also a 2X extender but it's pretty poor at 1000mm.

200mm is a great setup for "action" shots.

Bunch of ways to go.

I love the 20mm - lay flat on your belly and go close-focus/wide angle. Amazing!

There is still TONS of work that digital can't (yet) duplicate compared to film.
